We have recently concluded reading about Ruby Bridges and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Students were inspired by the bravery of a 6-year-old child in the face of such hatred and discrimination. \r\n\r\nMy students are currently using these supplies to create holiday greeting cards for a local senior living center whose residents have few visitors or contact from family. Unfortunately, we were rushed to get the cards delivered, and I didn't have time to take photos of them. Their creativity and heartfelt messages were full of kindness and wishes that the recipients have a wonderful holiday and know that people are thinking about them. \r\n\r\nI have an amazing group of students who are compassionate and caring. Providing them with an outlet to share that caring has made them very happy. Having snacks in the classroom allows them to re-energize in the afternoons and make it through the day. \r\n\r\nStudents have had an opportunity to investigate the plays contained in the \"10-minute Plays\" books and are in the process of choosing two of these plays to perform in the Spring. They want to do them all, but we have a limited number of students, and many of the plays require more students than I have. Still, it is wonderful to see them involved and working together to make a project work. \r\n\r\n\r\nThey have used the National Geographic books to investigate animal habitats and causes of endangerment. They created informative posters to highlight their chosen animal. Seeing a student who is multiple grade levels below his peers being able to participate in a grade-level activity was an incredible thing to be able to share with his mother.
