My students have a variety of learning needs due to moderate to severe disabilities. All of the students in my class are English language learners who come from a variety of primary language backgrounds. All of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch due to family financial hardship. Our classroom is very culturally diverse. We have students who are from South America, Central America, and Africa. The first and second graders in our room this year are very energetic and outgoing. They love to socialize with everyone and are highly motivated to improve their communication with their general education peers. Our students spend much of their time in mainstream settings, where opportunities for communication are plentiful. There are a few students in our class who do not yet speak and who use pictures as their primary form of communication for their wants, needs, and socialization. The use of photographs and picture exchange systems promote their inclusion.
