The softer environment, access to snacks, and creative materials are giving students more ways to regulate, connect, and express themselves during counseling and classroom-based support.\r\n\r\nThe light covers have made a meaningful difference in helping our counseling space feel less overwhelming. Many students are sensitive to fluorescent lighting, and the softer lighting helps make the room feel calmer and safer when they need a break, want to talk through a difficult situation, or are working on emotional regulation skills.\r\n\r\nThe snacks have also been an important support. Sometimes students arrive tired, distracted, or worried because they have not had enough to eat. Having a snack available gives students a small but powerful reminder that they are cared for. It can also help them feel more settled and ready to participate in counseling activities, problem-solving conversations, or lessons.\r\n\r\nWe are using the markers and whiteboard materials in a variety of ways, including emotion check-ins, drawing activities, coping-skills practice, and conversations about challenging topics. Art gives students another way to communicate when finding the right words feels difficult.\r\n\r\nOne especially meaningful moment happened during a small-group counseling activity focused on identifying feelings and coping strategies. Students entered the room, chose a snack, and settled into the calmer lighting. Rather than beginning with a verbal check-in, each student selected markers and drew what their day had felt like.\r\n\r\nOne student who is often quiet drew a picture showing \"too much noise\" and \"too many thoughts.\" That drawing opened the door for the student to share more about feeling overwhelmed during class. Together, the group brainstormed strategies such as taking a brief quiet break, using deep breathing, asking for help, and using positive self-talk. The student left with a personalized coping plan, and the group saw that there are many healthy ways to express emotions.\r\n\r\nStudents were immediately excited when they saw the new materials. The markers and whiteboard supplies were especially popular because students love having colorful, hands-on ways to participate. Several students commented on how much calmer the room felt with the softer lighting, and some were visibly more relaxed once they entered the space.\r\n\r\nFor students who struggle with sensory overload or anxiety, the changes communicate that this is a place where their needs are understood. The snacks have also been received with gratitude and excitement. A simple snack can help a student feel welcomed, supported, and ready to engage.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue incorporating these resources into individual counseling, small groups, and campus-wide counseling programming. Students will use the whiteboard and markers to create coping-skills toolkits, identify trusted adults and safe spaces, practice communication skills, and explore healthy ways to manage big feelings.\r\n\r\nWe will also continue using the calming environment as a space for students to reset, reflect, and build relationships with a caring adult. Students are learning that different tools work for different people, so they are being given opportunities to explore the fidgets, calming stickers, and visuals and identify which supports help them feel settled and ready to learn. We discuss how a sensory tool should help a student listen, think, participate, or return to a task—not become a distraction for themselves or others.\r\n\r\nOne meaningful moment occurred during a small-group lesson on recognizing body signals connected to stress and anxiety. Students used calming visuals to identify how their bodies feel when they are worried, restless, or overwhelmed, such as shaky hands, racing thoughts, trouble sitting still, or difficulty concentrating. Students then chose a sensory tool to use while practicing a calming strategy, including slow breathing, positive self-talk, or taking a brief reset. Several students were excited when they first saw the materials because they had never had such a variety of sensory options to try. Their reactions showed relief as well as enthusiasm: they appreciated having a quiet, acceptable way to keep their hands busy while working on staying present and engaged.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building individualized \"calm and focus\" plans. During upcoming counseling lessons and check-ins, they will practice recognizing when they need support, choosing a sensory strategy independently, and reflecting on whether it helped them refocus. Students will also create calming reminder cards using the stickers and visuals, listing strategies they can use in class, during transitions, or when emotions begin to feel too big. We write every single day about a different topic. If we skip it one day, they are upset and want to know why we aren't. My students go through more than one writing notebook every year. \r\n\r\nAnother tool we use during writing is sticky notes. Students use these to try out their spelling of words they are unsure of. After they try out their spelling, they bring it to me to check it. As we use this strategy throughout the year, students are getting better at their spelling and try harder words.
