We have been practicing cursive as a way to slow down, focus, and engage in a different kind of learning than they typically experience on a screen. One of my favorite moments was watching students who initially thought handwriting was \"old school\" become surprisingly invested in choosing their favorite pen and practicing their letters. The colorful supplies have also allowed students to add creativity to their work and make it feel more personal.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the fancy pens were definitely the first thing students noticed! They were excited to choose their own supplies and curious about why we were practicing cursive in a high school classroom. That curiosity gave us an opportunity to talk about how different activities can help us slow our brains down, focus our attention, and regulate our emotions.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building their cursive skills while connecting handwriting and creativity to our Calm by Design work. They will create personalized pieces of writing that combine words, lettering, and art. Students quietly grab what they need before class, after PE, during testing days, or when they are having a difficult moment and just need a reset. One moment that stood out recently was during a long afternoon lesson when a student who was struggling to stay engaged grabbed a granola bar and came back noticeably more focused and willing to participate. Small moments like that happen constantly, and they remind me how important these resources truly are.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the fully stocked snack station, many were genuinely surprised and excited. Several students immediately said things like, \"Wait, this is for us?\" or \"We can have one if we need it?\" The relief and gratitude on their faces was powerful. More than anything, the station helps students feel cared for and supported in a respectful, stigma-free way.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward this year, we are continuing to build a classroom environment centered on wellness, emotional regulation, and academic success. Having consistent access to snacks allows students to better participate in collaborative projects, class discussions, and our Calm by Design lessons focused on brain development, self-awareness, and resilience. That reminder showed just how important these resources are for helping students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the care cabinet fully stocked, many were surprised and excited that these items were available to them without judgment or embarrassment. Several students commented that it made the classroom feel welcoming and caring. For some, simply knowing the resources were there created a sense of relief and belonging.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students are continuing to build independence, self-advocacy, and emotional regulation skills through our classroom community routines and Calm by Design lessons.
