Instead of hovering over a tiny piece of paper, students are standing side-by-side, drawing out models, mapping out strategies, and talking through their reasoning out loud.\r\n\r\nFrom an instructional standpoint, these vertical whiteboards make math incredibly visible and dynamic. When students solve problems on the wall, it's easy for partners to catch and correct mistakes in real time, compare different problem-solving methods, and build off each other's ideas. Erasing and trying again is instant, which strips away the fear of getting an answer wrong and encourages kids to take risks with harder math concepts. Beyond just building automaticity with addition, subtraction, or multiplication facts, they force students to spot number patterns, use mental math strategies on the fly, and talk through their math reasoning out loud with a partner.\r\n\r\nWe do a lot of our fact practice during small-group rotations and partner time, where the whole room is buzzing with students working together. The games we play make math feel collaborative rather than isolated. It's given us such a fun, relatable story to dive into while practicing key skills like analyzing character growth, picking up on themes of empathy and adaptation, and making inferences based on what the characters do and say.\r\n\r\nThat said, keeping a room full of energetic kids focused during reading blocks takes the right setup. Having a standing desk available has made a noticeable difference, especially for students who just naturally need to move a bit to stay locked in. Instead of spending their energy trying to sit still in a standard chair, kids can stand, and focus entirely on the story.
