Many of our donors are avid readers, but teaching reading looks a bit unique in a speech and language setting. Most of the students I serve have receptive or expressive language delays, and many are also English Language Learners. To help them build crucial communication skills, I use the vivid imagery from these new texts to target active language production. During our lessons, we work on labeling objects, expanding two-to-three word utterances into complete sentences, and practicing pragmatic (social) language skills like turn-taking and conversation back-and-forth.\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive, play-based experience designed to meet students at their individual developmental levels. Because children retain significantly more when they are engaged with topics that captivate them, having access to texts that align with their interests and honor their home languages has made a world of difference. We use the colorful illustrations and relatable stories as springboards for guided play and dialogue, allowing students to explore new words in a fun, pressure-free setting.\r\nOur English Language Learners, in particular, have fallen in love with these new books. Having culturally relevant and visually rich stories has given them the confidence to participate more actively, bridge the gap between their home language and English, and make faster overall progress toward their communication goals.
