I've spoken to other coaches in the county and they are impressed that our students are so prepared early in the season. The team was thrilled when the boxes arrived, and they immediately began assembling the goal towers. The polygonal \"balls\" are very different then the mock up we had made out of rolled up socks! The air pump for the pneumatic system has enabled kids to practice with the new balls throughout our club meetings.\r\n\r\nHaving the actual field elements has also motivated the younger club members to learn how to code the autonomous portion of the competition. On several occasions our school was the only team who had code to run for this segment. However, without the actual field elements, our estimates of distances and power used to be far off. Hopefully we can be more successful this year. \r\n\r\nI'm still trying to recruit more girls for the club. So many graduated last year! But they came back over the summer to meet the incoming freshmen and pass along their knowledge. They were so excited pulling everything out of the boxes—one student said, \"This is awesome!\" and another immediately asked when we could start our first experiment. The materials made science feel real and hands-on, which is exactly what my students need to connect with the content.\r\n\r\nWe've already started using the Exploring Volcanoes kit, and the students loved building and erupting their own volcanoes. They made predictions, observed what happened, and got excited to share their findings. Even students who are usually shy about participating were eager to try the experiments and ask questions. The Solar System Viewer has also been a hit—students were amazed to see the planets up close, which helped bring our space lessons to life.\r\n\r\nNext, we're planning a group project where students will use the kits to design their own experiments, collect data, and present what they learned to the class. These resources are helping my students feel like real scientists, and they're learning so much while having fun. Students had a blast illuminating their grad chords. When they flicked the lights on people would invariably go \"oh!\". It wasn't overpoweringly bright, but it added just another bit of flair. \r\nThe chibitronics hat decoration was more challenging. As Edison said, we found \"10,000 ways that won't work\". Two of the more artistic club members persevered, though, and illuminated their beautifully decorated caps. The stadium lights were so bright that the photos do not convey it, but apparently their parents said it helped locate their graduates in the crowd of four hundred.\r\nOne Robotics Club senior who was easy to spot was the school valedictorian! With a 4.6 GPA he had many grad chords for various clubs and honors. I have video of his speech where you can better see his illuminated chord, but this website doesn't seem to let me upload video? Now the newest members of the club can practice with pistons while the upper classmen can fine tune their competition bot. They rushed to open them, and the excitement in the room was contagious. One student exclaimed, \"We get to do real science now!\" The hands-on kits immediately drew them in—passing around the specimen centers, exploring the Solar System viewer, and eagerly choosing which experiment to try first. These resources turned our classroom into a place of exploration and discovery.\r\n\r\nWe are already using the new materials in science lessons, and the impact has been incredible. For example, during our first experiment with the Truth or Myth? kit, my students worked together to test their predictions and record results. Students who are often hesitant to participate were suddenly engaged—touching, observing, and asking thoughtful questions. The tactile nature of the kits gave them a way to connect to abstract concepts, and it was clear they felt proud of themselves for understanding the science behind what they were doing.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students is to use these materials in a larger project where they will explore scientific questions, gather data, and present their findings to the class. These tools are giving them not only knowledge but also confidence. They are beginning to see themselves as scientists, problem solvers, and learners with something valuable to contribute. None of this would have been possible without your support.
