Instead of having to constantly redirect students or argue about phone use, I can now simply invite them to charge their devices on our new Wellness Wall. I tell my students, \"If I see your phone out, I'll just plug it in and charge it for you.\" What used to be a source of tension has become an opportunity for connection. Students now voluntarily place their phones in the charging pockets, knowing they can listen to music while they work or step away from distractions when they need focus time. It's created a sense of trust and respect in the classroom that didn't exist before.\r\nThe most exciting part for students is that this system gives them autonomy while still maintaining structure. They appreciate that the charging stations are there to help, not punish, and it's been amazing to see how quickly they've embraced it. Several students who used to struggle with staying on task now start class by putting their phones away to charge—completely on their own. This project has made me a better teacher by shifting the focus from discipline to support, helping students balance their well-being and learning in a healthy, productive way.","fullyFundedDate":1761322646517,"projectUrl":"project/powering-focus-wellness-wall-with-stude/9763985/","projectTitle":"Powering Focus: Wellness Wall with Student Phone Charging","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. Before the generous help of the our donors, students would have to draw their graphs by hand and it made it challenging to create accurate and precise graphs because of the inconsistent spacing and intervals. Now, students just need to scale the graphs themselves and they're immediately ready to start plotting points! \r\n\r\n\r\nThe current unit that we're on focuses on linear and exponential functions and comparing their graphs is key in understanding the differences between the two functions. Students are able see a clear linear or exponential rate of change with these graphs and it has significantly helped them compare and contrast different graphs and functions! \r\n\r\nStudents often work in groups at the whiteboards in the classroom and having the magnetic dry erase coordinate planes sets the expectation for students to create a graph as a mathematical model. They are relieved that they have the resources to graph with ease and also have the flexibility to move the graph to different parts of the whiteboard because they're magnetic. The coordinate planes also come as a set of 4 pieces and depending on the domain and range, students can choose which quadrants they need so that they can prioritize needed space on the whiteboards. \r\n\r\nThe next unit is Features of Functions which focuses on identifying key features of graphs that are not linear or exponential. I expect that these coordinate planes will continue to be a great tool for students as they analyze and interpret data from their graphs!","fullyFundedDate":1750809016710,"projectUrl":"project/plot-points-and-possibilities/9404992/","projectTitle":"Plot Points and Possibilities!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Marquez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10053013_orig.jpg?crop=2470,2470,x813,y714&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749500560346","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10053013"},{"teacherId":9216232,"projectId":9716679,"letterContent":"This project has been absolutely amazing for my students. When I opened the boxes my classroom was filled with excitement as students explored the fidget toys and colorful playdough. The playdough, especially, has become a classroom favorite—students use it to keep their hands busy and their minds focused during lessons. One of my favorite moments was when a student started sculpting a tiny burger out of playdough, and over the following days, other students from different periods added their own \"ingredients.\" What started as a small creative outlet turned into a collaborative art piece that now proudly sits on my desk printer. These small moments of creativity have helped students focus, relax, and find joy in learning.\r\nThe most important impact of this project is how it has transformed my classroom into a more inclusive and sensory-friendly environment. Students who used to struggle with restlessness or anxiety during work time now have a way to self-regulate and participate more fully in lessons. Your donation allowed me to offer each student a binder with dividers and paper, which might not seem like much, but it was a game changer for many! \r\n\r\nWe began by creating tabs and sections for our ELA notebooks (lecture notes, argumentation, expository writing, reading/analysis, classwork), plus a space to log the daily agenda and any homework. The implementation of these notebooks in the second semester created an organizational lifeline to many of my students who are highly intelligent and who also needed support in creating structures for their own success. \r\n\r\nAmazingly, quiz and test scores began to rise and the rate of completed work submission did too! Many students seemed to show pride in their notebooks. And, anecdotally, I found that several students who previously showed apathy in all of the other work in our class were at a minimum writing down the daily agendas in their binders by the end of May. It's a small thing, but creating opportunities for all students to succeed, even in something seemingly small like this, is important. \r\n\r\nI am absolutely doing this again with my classes next year, so long as I can find the funding. After receiving the materials, the Set Game and boards, we immediately put them to use.\r\n\r\nThe first impact was with teachers. I taught teachers how to play Set and a new version of the game called Set Quilt at our monthly Math Teachers Circle. Teachers were new to this game and quickly got hooked. Three teachers implemented Set in their classroom the next week.\r\n\r\nThe second impact was on students. Playing Set after Spring Break was a hit. First, I rearranged the room to have teams play at the boards. This allowed for the creation of a large circle in the middle of the room. We used the circle for a community-building activity, and I introduced Set. Only 1 student out of the 120 students I have had heard of the game or played it.\r\n\r\nAfter students had a moment to see the cards in the 3 by 4 array, they started to open up and make an attempt at making a set. A number of students asked if the 3 cards they picked were a set, and I asked their teammates to verify. The buzz in the room indicated that students started to feel more confident. \r\n\r\nStudents ask to play Set during our block period now. I have also introduced this game to my after-school group, and they love it.
