As a new teacher, I put quite a bit of my own money into creating my classroom environment, and still needed some basic school supplies, which this project gave me. I feel so grateful for the support of each donor that made this possible. My students and I don't have to worry about getting a bunch of supplies and can focus more on our learning, which feels great. I have students from my class, and even from other 6th grade classes, accessing the hygiene products when they need them. I can tell that they appreciate having a designated safe place to get the items they need to take care of themselves. I think the students felt supported and cared for when I first introduced the self-care station. Even if the topic of hygiene can feel uncomfortable to discuss in 6th grade, I know that they feel good knowing there isn't any judgment or questioning when they use the station. I hope to continue adding to the station over time, perhaps through an additional project, but for now it has supported my students very nicely. The students especially love when they earn a reward to use the fidget toys. Some of my students with IEPs have more frequent access to these toys, which has supported them greatly. The kids and I also love the calming ambiance that many of the sensory-friendly resources offer. Our classroom feels safe, welcoming, and calming, when it comes to access to a calm corner, to sensory tools, lighting, and so much more.
