Since receiving our art materials, we have already completed numerous projects in my class. Students made posters for their favorite genre of literature, they made identify thumbprints about their names, they imagined and wrote stories about a gladiator for our Rome Unit and then created a 3-D doll to go with their stories. Students have said they really enjoyed all of these projects, but they especially enjoyed the gladiators that they made to go with their stories because it was a visual representation of the characters that they imagined. Plus, they loved being able to make their gladiators look fearsome and even splattered in fake blood!\r\n\r\nIt's so wonderful to see the creativity that they exhibited in these projects. Not a single gladiator or poster is the same. Each student put his or her own individual spin on the assignment, which is exactly why I love this type of learning. It is hitting so many modalities: visual thinking, problem solving, creativity, and imagination. I am looking forward to using them again for future projects, such as a boardgame students will be making to show their understanding of our next history unit. \r\n\r\nMany of my students would not have access to the art materials they need to complete these projects at home, which is why I need to provide them in my classroom. By allowing students an opportunity to use these graphing calculators, they are able to make connections with equations and data that they weren't able to previously. Used in conjunction with motion sensors, they are now able to create their own data for analyzing. Through some of the lessons where these calculators were utilized, I saw classes with 100% participation. Students were excited to share with me what they had discovered and were taking on more challenges.\r\nLinear equations and proportional functions are a huge part of 8th grade math. These topics tie together many of the other standards that we see over the course of this year.
