This year my junior students have been immersed in the traditional canon: we recently finished \"The Crucible\" and \"The Catcher in the Rye.\" While those classics offer invaluable insight into historical and literary movements, several students expressed curiosity about reading contemporary works that feel closer to their own lives and the world they recognize. \"Born a Crime\" will bridge that gap since it provides a relatively recent, firsthand account of life during and after apartheid, offering historical context that feels more immediate and relatable than some older canonical texts. \r\n\r\nTrevor Noah's voice will engage students who have felt disconnected by the distance of time and place in the other books we've studied. This range helps students learn how to both condense and expand their writing, developing essential editing skills.\r\n\r\nThough we don't read the novel aloud in class due to its mature content, I consistently see students actively engaged in reading independently, often reading ahead of schedule. The discussions sparked by the novel's themes are always thoughtful and meaningful, encouraging students to reflect deeply on their own experiences. Year after year, former students return to tell me how much they loved this book and how it was their favorite read of sophomore year. Because of your support, we have been able to use these supplies daily in class. \r\n\r\nWe use the mini music staff white boards to give the AP Music Theory students opportunities to practice writing out the concepts and skills we are learning and practicing in class. It also makes formative assessments faster and easier to do in class, which means I can better assess what I need to review/re-teach. In addition to AP Music Theory, we are also able to use them in our other classes such as concert band and even in marching band.\r\n\r\nThe pencils have also been a huge help in every one of our classes. With the funds, we were able to purchase pens, pencils, highlighters, and other essential supplies that students now use every day. These materials have ensured that every student comes to class fully equipped, which has raised the quality of their work and participation. For example, during a recent annotation activity with *Of Mice and Men*, every student used highlighters to track themes and character development, and the discussion that followed was deeper and more thoughtful because no one was held back by missing supplies.\r\n\r\nAnother exciting purchase was a spinning prize wheel, which we use as part of our classroom reward system. Students can earn spins for positive behaviors, academic effort, and teamwork. The first time it was used, one student won a \"Homework Pass,\" and the entire class erupted in cheers. The wheel has quickly become a fun, motivating way to recognize hard work while also creating moments of joy and community.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies and reward wheel were first introduced, students' reactions were priceless. Their excitement and energy reminded me how something simple can transform the classroom experience. The band was able to hear across the whole football field and we were able to bring it to competitions in order to warm up with it. It also allows us the ability to link it with other boomboxes of the same type should we need to daisy chain them together in the future.
