Your donation helped us purchase trays, bins, and sorting bowls, all of which have already proven to be extremely useful and helpful to kids. \r\n\r\nLEGO sets are so exciting, but keeping them together as a set with all of the bricks, along with the Instructions and the picture of the finished project can be quite challenging. These new materials have allowed us to do just that. Students are getting to practice their executive functioning by sorting and organizing pieces. It's fun seeing the different ways students approach it. Having these sets has helped my students learn about organization and management, self regulation, and STEM. \r\n\r\nWhen I first debuted the sets, I cannot even begin to convey how excited my students were. It is roughly half the size of a normal classroom, but serves almost 300 students in grades 5-8. So there is a limit to how much I can offer my students in the way of physical books. What I can do, however, is create a space for them that allows them to awaken passions, incite inquiry, and unleash creativity. While that is partly achieved through the collection of books, not every child is an avid reader, and the computers provided as part of this grant have helped ALL of my students to unleash their creativity and find new passions, because they enabled use of our laser cutter and engraver, and our cricut cutting machine. \r\n\r\nIn fact, many of the students most excited to create custom stickers, cut out wooden boxes, engrave keychains and pendants, and make beautiful designs for their caregivers and friends have been the students who are not traditionally engaged by just books. My students have had such a good time using these new tools, and they are so glad to be able to do so using computers that are actually up to the task of doing design work, which is very processor intensive and for which most school issued computers are simply not designed. \r\n\r\nSo thank you so very much for helping to make our maker space possible! Fortunately for the students at my school and thanks to your generosity, they will not have to experience that frustration. Upon receiving the computer paid for by this grant the students were immediately able to start using the new cricut we received in the library. \r\n\r\nOur first project was a fun one -- for the end of the year, each class used the software on the new computer to design a large waterproof sticker as a thank you to their classroom teacher, which we then printed, and then cut with the cricut. At the end of that day's library class, each class was able to present this sticker to their teacher to put on their water bottle or laptop! It was a huge success, and got kids interested in using the technology. Many students were inspired to create their own custom stickers, representing their interests, favorite books, and personalities!\r\n\r\nOne of the best things was seeing the students who don't normally participate much in library take to using these new tools. Creative expression is for everyone, even students who don't read much. Students are so excited to use it to create things both for themselves and others that they wouldn't have been able to make without this tool. \r\n\r\nToday a group of four seventh grade boys, most of whom are not big readers and don't often participate in library class, were super excited to be able to create engraved wooden pendants for their moms today. They even came back at the end of school and got some hemp cord to hang them from. \r\n\r\nOur fifth graders have also been excited to get to use the xtool to create custom puzzles. They have drawn pictures on thick paper, then glued them to fiberboard, and then used the xtool laser cutter to cut the pieces out. \r\n\r\nAll in all, this has been such a blessing and a wonderful addition to the library.
