Instructional videos and written examples aren't enough for many students to understand middle school math instruction, especially in online teaching. They need to be able to ask clarifying questions. When they can interrupt me mid-problem to ask, " I don't understand where the x went " or " how did the equation go from 22 to 2?", they can get immediate feedback which allows them to understand the steps to solving a complex math problem. This process not only allows them to better understand and solve the problem they are working on, but to develop their own mental frameworks of mathematical problem solving. This requires a larger iPad due to the length and complexity of the problems we work on. Once we are back in the classroom, I will also use the iPad Pro to project feedback onto the screen for students to view as they are working. The larger iPad Pro will allow for this confidence-building and powerful teaching method that recognizes students' "math smarts".
