The kids were especially excited to role play selling and buying ice cream with the toy \"Ice Cream Shop.\" Also, boys and girls alike asked to pretend play with the new toy \"Construction Tools.\" Finally, I was happily surprised to see several students building small towers with the \"Stacking Rocks\" game. I wasn't sure if that toy would be too hard for them, but many were able to stack more than five rocks at a time and clearly enjoyed the challenge. Next week I intend to bring out the toy \"Pizza Oven\" as well as the toy \"Vet Clinic.\" \r\n\r\nGiven that our teachers are pushed to focus on improving test scores, free play time in the library is one of the few opportunities during the week that the children can actually play, and they relish it. In fact, every morning when I greet the kids in the cafeteria, a ton of K-2 students run up to me to ask if it is their day to go to the library. Pencils tapping, chairs scraping, partners talking through their math, and the general hum of a room full of seven and eight year olds doing the work of learning. Most of us reach for headphones at home when we need to concentrate, and that is exactly what these are doing for my students, just at a much smaller scale and with much higher stakes. When a student slips on a pair, the room gets quieter and their own thinking gets louder. During independent reading, students who used to reread the same line over and over are now finishing whole pages. During writing, students who used to sit frozen in front of a blank paper are filling their lines. The headphones did not teach them anything new. They cleared away the noise that was standing between my students and what they already knew how to do.\r\n\r\nWhat my students love most is that it is their choice. The headphones live in a basket they can reach, and anyone can grab a pair without asking permission or explaining why they need one. That small piece of independence has made a bigger difference than I expected. Because everyone uses them, no one gets singled out for needing quiet, and asking for calm has become a completely ordinary thing to do in our room. Several students have started reaching for a pair on their own the moment they feel themselves getting overwhelmed, which is exactly the self-regulation we have been working toward all year.\r\n\r\nOne of my multilingual learners has warmed to them in a way that still surprises me. He used to put his head down during independent work, not because he could not do it, but because there was too much happening around him to get started. Now he takes a pair of headphones, finds his spot, and quietly reads aloud to himself in a whisper. That whispering is a big deal. It means he is practicing his English out loud, on his own terms, in a space he made for himself.
