They immediately wanted to explore the different items and learn how they could use them. It was wonderful to see their excitement about having a space designed specifically to support their feelings and well-being.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue practicing self-regulation strategies and talking about different emotions during our classroom lessons. Students will learn how to identify what they are feeling, choose an appropriate coping strategy, and return to the learning environment when they feel ready. Some of their favorite games from this order are Connect 4, Match Madness, Chess, and the US map puzzle. They also really enjoy drawing Kawaii characters and objects using tracing paper and the selection of adorable drawing books from this order. \r\n\r\nThese students get to choose a game, puzzle, or art activity every other week after they check out books in the library. Needless to say, \"Game Day\" in the library is a special event that all of the upper graders look forward to greatly. Since I teach research and other library skills too, these students understand that if they pay attention and work hard during our library lessons, they will \"earn\" play time. Of course, having such a wide assortment of fun games is a huge motivation for them to do their best when I am teaching library skills. The kids were especially excited to role play selling and buying ice cream with the toy \"Ice Cream Shop.\" Also, boys and girls alike asked to pretend play with the new toy \"Construction Tools.\" Finally, I was happily surprised to see several students building small towers with the \"Stacking Rocks\" game. I wasn't sure if that toy would be too hard for them, but many were able to stack more than five rocks at a time and clearly enjoyed the challenge. Next week I intend to bring out the toy \"Pizza Oven\" as well as the toy \"Vet Clinic.\" \r\n\r\nGiven that our teachers are pushed to focus on improving test scores, free play time in the library is one of the few opportunities during the week that the children can actually play, and they relish it. In fact, every morning when I greet the kids in the cafeteria, a ton of K-2 students run up to me to ask if it is their day to go to the library.
