Our new cooking equipment, measuring cups, kid safe knives, griddle, aprons, and chef hats, opened doors to meaningful skill-building and genuine joy that extended far beyond the classroom kitchen.\r\nStudents who may previously have had limited opportunities to practice real-world skills now gathered around our new cooking supplies to create new snacks such as pancakes and quesadillas. They measured ingredients with precision, building foundational math concepts while preparing actual food. More importantly, they learned critical safety skills by handling hot cooking surfaces with proper guidance and support. Each cooking session became a rich, multisensory learning experience where abstract concepts became concrete and tangible.\r\nBeyond academics, students developed life skills that will serve them long after they leave our classroom. They practiced independence by measuring, following multi-step directions, and making decisions about ingredients. They learned to handle kitchen tools responsibly, building genuine safety awareness. Wearing aprons and chef hats turned cooking into a playful, social experience where every student felt like a real chef, boosting confidence and engagement. For many of these students, cooking success meant trying something new and discovering they could do it, a powerful realization that builds resilience and self-advocacy.\r\nWhat started as a cooking activity became a catalyst for broader growth. Students carried their newfound confidence into other classroom activities, and parents reported excitement at home when students talked about what they'd made. Peers without disabilities asked to join our cooking sessions, creating natural opportunities for inclusion and friendship. Your donation didn't just provide equipment, it provided opportunity for students to try something new to engage them in learning.","fullyFundedDate":1761760148915,"projectUrl":"project/recipe-for-learning/9849052/","projectTitle":"Recipe for Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. M","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10324772_orig.jpg?crop=1511,1511,x0,y20&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760988122321","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10324772"},{"teacherId":7777969,"projectId":9758576,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating your hard earn money to materials and overall experiences that will greatly benefit my 4th grade students. Not only will the students this year get to, for example, follow along as I read aloud Matilda, but students in years to come will reap the same benefits. Everyone has their own copy which will allow students to better understand the text than they would if it was simply read to them. This will help them further develop literary skills. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, I want to thank you for all of the math tools, materials, and games that were purchased. Bird watching helps students develop essential self-regulation skills through stillness and quiet observation, which supports emotional well-being and readiness to learn. Tools like child-friendly binoculars, simple bird guides, clipboards, sketching supplies, and journals empower students to engage as scientists and nature lovers. They'll learn to observe, question, and record what they see, strengthening their critical thinking and attention to detail. At the same time, sketching and writing about their experiences promote creativity, literacy, and personal expression. Most importantly, this project creates an inclusive and peaceful space where all students, regardless of learning style or ability, can connect with nature, explore at their own pace, and experience the joy of discovery right outside the classroom door.","fullyFundedDate":1745981716605,"projectUrl":"project/backyard-bird-watching-to-inspire-curios/9252126/","projectTitle":"Backyard Bird Watching to Inspire Curiosity and Calm","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Linder","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7377460_orig.jpg?crop=827,827,x0,y71&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1642611057124","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7377460"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37952","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":363,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":15,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"22.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.3,"schoolId":37952,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Perry Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Perry Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-diego-unified-school-district/perry-elementary-school/37952"}
