One of the things that we are using the magnets to investigate is what objects they attract, do not attract, and even repel. Students worked in pairs, during center time, to test the items in the kits—and sort them into \"magnetic\" and \"not magnetic\" categories. When they first saw the materials, their eyes lit up with excitement, and they couldn't wait to explore. Many students were amazed to feel two magnets push away from each other for the first time. The children were able to continue their investigations by following the picture instructions on the experiment cards that come with the kit.\r\n\r\nNext, we are building on this discovery by recording our findings in simple charts, making predictions before testing new objects, and learning why certain materials like metal are magnetic. There was a collective groan when the timer went off signaling the end of reading time.
