The resources from this project have helped me refresh and organize the space and replenish everyday essentials, making it feel warmer, more comfortable, and more inviting for the students who walk through the door.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful things I have noticed is how quickly students make themselves at home in the space. A student may come in feeling overwhelmed or unsure, settle into the room, and slowly begin to open up. Another might stop by for just a minute to say hello or check in. Those little moments are incredibly important. When a student feels comfortable enough to walk through my door and ask for help, take a break, or simply be themselves, I know we are creating something meaningful. Your donations are helping send a simple message to my students: **You are welcome here. You are cared for. And you don't have to figure everything out by yourself.**\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, students will use this space to practice coping skills, self-advocacy, problem-solving, friendship skills, and strategies for managing the ups and downs of middle school. These larger pieces of laboratory glassware allowed us to complete a hands-on chemistry project creating red cabbage pH indicators for the entire class. Students chopped and boiled red cabbage to extract the pigment, then used the solution to test a variety of household substances such as vinegar, soda, soap, and lemon juice. Seeing the indicator change colors from pink to purple to green made the concept of acids and bases feel real and memorable.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the oversized lab equipment, they immediately became curious and engaged. Many commented that they felt like \"real scientists\" working with professional-level materials. The larger equipment also made the lab run much more smoothly because we could prepare enough solution safely and efficiently for multiple class periods.\r\n\r\nThis project has sparked even more interest in chemistry experiments and scientific inquiry. Our next steps include using the cabbage indicator to compare pH levels in local water samples and designing experiments where students predict and test chemical reactions. Most students had one or no notebook starting their year off. Thanks to this effort, I was able to ensure that every students received at least 2 spiral notebook and 5 folders, 1 for each class. In addition, every students was able to receive 2 skinny highlighters, 1 thick highlighter, 3 pencils, some notecards, and a class set of markers and colored pencils. \r\n\r\nWhat's even more exciting, I was able to help out a handful of students who were outside of the 10th grade (mostly 11th graders). This allowed students to mingle from the two grades, creating a sense of community to each other. As a school psychologist at a high school, I support all students with aims at strengthening social emotional skills and improving overall well-being. One way that I do that is by being an adult advisor for Sources of Strength, a chapter of a national suicide prevention program that focuses on building student strengths (mental health, positive friends, healthy activities, spirituality, etc). We are a relatively new group at our school, so your donations helped us to initiate some schoolwide campaigns, while also supporting individual students.\r\n\r\nOne way that we utilized what was shared with us, was by leading a donation drive for animal shelters during the holiday season, one of the coldest and toughest times of the year. This was the first time our school has done something like this, and your offerings helped to jump start the initiative. We coupled this event with bringing in therapy dogs from our local Love on a Leash chapter at the end of this campaign during finals week. We were able to strengthen our connection with this organization and the animal shelter, while supporting all student wellness at our school with a fun event, which also has research behind it with petting animals and increasing mental health. I definitely saw the joy and stresses being released during this event, which brought our school closer together. On a more specific note, I saw this event affect a particular student who generally disengages from adults and events at school. By being able to bring these therapy dogs in, I saw him light up and he stayed with us during the entire event. I was able to share pictures of this with his parents, which they have not seen since he's started high school. You'll probably be able to see glimpses of him in the linked photos, and the one full face (or two!) is me and Buddy. :)\r\n\r\nThe remaining, human-focused donations are for supporting the unhoused communities, individuals and families. Sources of Strength is putting together care packages with items collected from you and our school members, including socks, caps, toothbrushes, protein snacks, feminine hygiene products, soap, fur baby items, etc. This is especially important as we continue to see this population grow nearby our schools, and wanting to do our part to help. This also has a more personal meaning for Sources, as we have a family who has recently fallen on difficult times and staying in their vehible as a family of five. Sources was able to share some of our materials to show our care for our own community while they get back on their feet.\r\n\r\nSources of Strength is excited to continue developing campaigns this semester that not only help us to build strengths in our school to improve mental health and reduce at-risk behavior/thoughts, but help to bring us closer to our broader communities.
