I received a message that the books for which I originally created this project were no longer available, so I had to switch the books that the donations funded. I chose \"The Outsiders\" because I have taught it in the past and students love it. (I read it in 8th grade myself and have always remembered the impact of the story.) The price was slightly different, so I don't have a full class set, but I'm close.\r\n\r\n\"The Outsiders\" is a story that addresses socio-economic status, discrimination, judging others, complex family dynamics, friendship and loyalty, and consequences for one's actions, even if they are unintentional actions. Middle school is a great time to be exploring these themes and developing empathy for others and \"The Outsiders\" is a great vehicle for these lessons. Even some of my most reluctant students have been interested in this book and have learned from it, and this makes my educator heart very happy.\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for your generous contribution to my class with books that I will use every year for many years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1745328115074,"projectUrl":"project/to-understand-or-not-to-understand/9144706/","projectTitle":"To Understand, or Not To Understand?","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pheal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4309669"},{"teacherId":8442129,"projectId":8721917,"letterContent":"I am thrilled to report that my students are starting to demonstrate more kindness and empathy towards their classmates and schoolmates! I have heard more kind words and fewer complaints. When there is a conflict, students are starting to address the problem with clear statements rather than shrill voices yelling something hurtful. And they're looking forward to opportunities to make a friendship bracelet for another friend as we explore how good friends act.\r\n We still have a ways to go. Sometimes we forget how we want to behave so that we are good friends, too. But those times are decreasing as we practice compassion and empathy. The students eagerly engage in the stories about the 'Spots of' emotions, especially the ones represented by a little stuffed character from our classroom set.\r\n Thank you for bring so much goodness to our classroom! The beads, books, and cards help make make the concepts easier to grasp. Thanks to your generosity, students are learning to embrace and celebrate the differences that make the world so interesting while realizing that we are more alike than they realized.
