Students were not only hesitant, but unaware of how to calm and quiet their bodies and minds for any amount of time. That very first day, the first students to reflect on the experience being a positive one were two of my ADHD friends who consistently struggle with body regulation. \r\nAs the days progressed, I witnessed more students \"giving in\" to this time, closing their eyes and being present in the moment. It is now part of our daily routine where we ground ourselves in being present in the day, and set a positive intention or personal goal. There have been a few days, where because of scheduling conflicts, we have been unable to take this time for ourselves and all students are disappointed. Moving forward, I know that this time is sacred and we need to find time for it regardless. \r\n\r\nNow that we are learning to be mindful and present, we are moving on to yoga. We are taking it slow and easy with the most basic of movements. It's also fun to watch them work together as a team to square points.\r\nThe soccer nets were a huge hit! The soccer balls were a smaller size for my young students. To see them cooperate together, trying to pass the ball and make a goal was very exciting to watch. Having extra storage in the classroom has been so helpful.\r\nThe storage containers were used to organize the shelves with like items put together. They are also helpful for prepping materials for our math lessons. \r\nThey are small enough size for our young learners to be able to carry easily and put back on the shelf. One of our favorite projects was \"Reading Buddies,\" where students paired up to read together in the new center. It was truly heartwarming to see how the cozy and inviting space encouraged even my most reluctant readers to dive into books with enthusiasm.\r\nWhen my students first saw the reading center, their eyes lit up with joy! Some gasped and ran straight to the area, grabbing pillows and books with excitement. It was immediately clear how proud and excited they were to have a space created just for them.\r\nAt the time, we were working on reading response journals and book reports. After reading in the center, students reflected on their books by writing about characters, setting, and theme in both English and Spanish. They'll put the letters in alphabetical order and then go through, touching each one and saying the names. After we do an art project involving glue, which inevitably gets on the tables, we have helpers get them back to their original state. When families are coming in for Family Friday or 4th graders are coming in to read, students are able to clean their tables to show off our tidy classroom. We also use these wipes to clean our cubbies and keep them spotless. Our next door Kindergarten teacher has also been able to share with the wipes so her students can keep their tables clean as well!
