This project was funded at the end of the prior school year so we did not begin using these resources until recently. The items received helped to organize my classroom art supplies, provided my students with high quality acrylic paint that we have used several times now, and enabled me to purchase some excellent resources on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT). Saving time and energy is vital to my success and ability to consistently provide the highest level of instruction. So far, I have purchased a digital notebook component on TPT to support my curriculum, supplemental activities for Fahrenheit 451 to make lessons more engaging, and a slideshow template to support my daily agenda display.\r\nAs part of our school-wide Olympics, the juniors in my leadership group were also able to use some of the art materials to paint masks as part of our Mardi Gras theme. However, it is important that students experience WHOLE texts, to increase attention and explore stories in greater depth than they can in a few short paragraphs or pages.\r\nThe books purchased for this project will allow students to choose books beyond classics, from a book of interesting stories of bizarre deaths (for my science lovers), stories of women of color breaking through barriers, books written in unique ways (Long Way Down), and books that will introduce them to worlds of fantasy and modern dystopias. There are also stories of love and teenage heartache. \r\nStudents will read these in small groups, host discussions, create art projects, and demonstrate learning in other exciting ways. The students were very excited to get some new options for their lit circle reading groups. These books contain characters and stories that represent a wide variety of cultures and experiences, which makes them invaluable resources for our class. While the classics are always great, seeing people who \"look like\" ourselves helps them to be more relatable. Many students have already expressed interest in reading more than one of these choices. \r\n\r\nAlready this year we have expanded our literary horizons through graphic memoirs, non fiction STEM accounts, and more. Since receiving these books, my students have worked through two units in our curriculum that are directly related to this subject matter. The first was a unit on crime where they explored themes of justice, forgiveness, and mercy as well as learning more about our legal system. The second was a unit on the Civil Rights Movement where they learned about the fight for equality and some of the issues that persist in our country in regards to cycles of poverty, crime, and injustice. While exploring all of these topics in short texts is great, these books helped them take the extra step.\r\nHalf of my students are reading Monster, which is a book that focusing on the main character, Steve, who is on trial for murder. This book is written as a screen play in a first person point of view. It is a work of fiction but is highly relatable and exposes these students to a type of writing they have never seen before. They are very engaged in the reading and discussing the legal processes through the characters.\r\nThe other half are reading Just Mercy, which is a non-fiction. This book records several cases that a lawyer working in Alabama has worked on over the years. They are challenged to consider how mental health, age, life experiences, race, and other factors affect a persons ability to receive a fair trial with reasonable punishments when convicted. It has been very eye opening for them to see that the fight for civil rights continues in many places.\r\nIt is my sincere belief that these resources are helping them to think critically, engage with books in ways they hadn't considered, and to gain more compassion and understanding for each other. This would not have been possible without your generosity. \r\nI look forward to using these resources for years to come, to continue to impact students and, hopefully, help them become more compassionate individuals.
