The story explores ideas such as identity, fitting in, friendship, loyalty, peer groups, family, and the pressure to be seen or accepted by others. These themes immediately gave my students topics they could relate to and discuss with genuine interest.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students are learning important literacy skills such as identifying theme, analyzing character development, making inferences, examining point of view, and using evidence from the text to support their thinking. We also discuss how characters' experiences and choices influence the events of the story and how a person's background can shape the way they view others.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active experience. We read portions of the novel together, pause to discuss important moments, ask questions, make predictions, and reflect on the characters' decisions. Students also have opportunities to talk with classmates and respond to the text through writing.\r\n\r\nWhat has been especially rewarding is seeing how interested my sixth graders are in the ideas presented in the novel. The conversations about belonging and fitting in have been particularly engaging because these are issues students understand at their age. Having a full set of books has allowed every student to participate in the same shared reading experience and has helped make our literacy lessons more meaningful and engaging.","fullyFundedDate":1773286691463,"projectUrl":"project/class-set-of-the-novel-the-outsiders-by/10134674/","projectTitle":"Class Set of the Novel the Outsiders by S.E.
