Their final for the class, after reading the text, was to radically dream for building their own communities. They dreamt up how they could change something in their community that centered on their proposed major in college. Parable of the Sower was essential to this. \r\n\r\nThe Nickel Boys is a Summer assignment for my rising seniors for AP Literature. They are continuing their examination into the education system. They have read The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way and they will be reading Jonothan Kozol's Savage Inequalities. This is historical fiction that examines a reform school that was oppressively problematic towards poor Black and white youth. We used these fantastic slides to discover the microbial world that is in the ocean. My students gained experience using microscopes and saw the beautiful variety of marine microbes. We did a lab where they went to different stations and drew the microbe at medium level and wrote the scientific name. Later, they did additional research on each microbe about their role in the ecosystem. In addition to the slides that I was able to purchase, they looked at water samples and used the knowledge they gained by looking at the slides to help them identify marine microbes. This wouldn't have been possible without you!
