Our art section is so busy each Friday during Free Choice time. It is an absolute favorite among students. We've worked really hard to be responsible and respectful with all the items so that they can last as long as possible.\r\n\r\nThe Colors of the World materials have been super meaningful, allowing students to color people of all colors, including themselves and their families, and especially the friends they spend their days at school with. The paint cups have already proven themselves to the happy accidents that come with painting, and the wire organizers have been turned to the side to use as drying racks. The tape dispensers and tape are one of the most popular mediums and the organizer has made it easier for students to access gel pens and crazy scissors with organization. \r\n\r\nWatching students choose stencils to create different drawings and patterns and then add wiggly eyes have literally brought their art to life. The paint sticks are also another wildly popular medium and have been wonderful for quick and mess-free work. The ink pads truly have a mind of their own and make a statement on paper and tables!\r\n\r\nYou've given my students so many options to develop essentials skills like fine motor coordination and emotional intelligence, while fueling their creative experiences. We are so grateful for donors like you who believe in our students even from afar. Please know that all items on this list that you have provided our students are being used EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. \r\n\r\nEvery morning during our phonics lesson, we use the whiteboard markers and eraser to write our sounds, encode words using the focus skill, write high frequency words, and write sentences. During small groups, students are working even harder to grow their reading and writing skills with me or instructional aides. When we work on math, whiteboards and markers are quick ways to share our thinking with each other and show what we know, whether we are adding numbers or drawing and counting coins. \r\n\r\nOur independent work each day is differentiated based on students' skill capabilities. Some of these activities include cutting and gluing. They decode words and then cut out the matching picture. They read sentences to comprehend and also cut and glue the matching pictures. In our current math concept, we are cutting and gluing coins, sorting them by type. We are also making so many crafts for all the holidays around the world. Fridays are especially busy with glue when we have Free Choice because are is a hot place for all that glue and creativity. \r\n\r\nNo matter what pencil brand we use in the classroom, the erasers are no match for tenacity and power of first graders. We are so thankful for these specific pencil top erasers because they hold their structure through it all (most of it...). And they actually do their simple job of erasing. The Kleenex are also helping our students tackle runny noses and germs all around, remind us to cover our mouths when we cough and sneeze. It's also helping us to stay healthy by washing our hands and using sanitizer.\r\n\r\nLastly, the mailbox has become a buzzing hub each day at dismissal. Students pack up their backpacks by grabbing their lunch boxes and water bottles, and checking their mailbox without my prompting. It used to be chaos handing back papers while everyone was moving about and packing up, but now it has become the easiest job for me and students. Their papers are no longer a mixed up pile on their tables, instead they are neatly separated and placed in their own mailbox slot. Table captains are also taking the lead each time we collect papers to take home. They just place them in the correct mailbox and move on. \r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for your support. I logged onto Seesaw and completed a reading activity, recording my voice using the microphone part of the headphones. They all got onto Seesaw, practiced using the recording option, and had so much fun. \r\n\r\nNow, part of their weekly work is to log onto Seesaw, and record themselves reading words and sentences focusing on the phonics skills we have practiced in class. They have been so excited each time, having their friends listening to their recordings and cheering each other on. It truly fills my teacher heart. This is the magic of learning. \r\n\r\nWe use these headphones every single day, whether it's to share our reading skills, listen to books on Epic's endless online library, or to expand our learning on Lexia and Prodigy.
