Teaching a novel is about far more than just reading through chapters—it is about equipping students with critical thinking skills, analyzing complex characters, and exploring themes that reflect the real world. Through this powerful text, my students have been learning how to analyze literary elements like point of view, figurative language, and character development, while also practicing how to evaluate different perspectives, construct evidence-based arguments, and engage in thoughtful, respectful group discussions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, collaborative, and deeply engaging experience. Rather than reading in silence, our classroom comes alive with partner reading, group analysis, and dynamic discussions. When we dive into The Hate U Give, students are constantly annotating their books, identifying key quotes, and connecting the story's themes to current events and their own live experiences. It has transformed our reading time into a vibrant space where every student feels inspired to share their thoughts and question the world around them.\r\n\r\nThis book has resonated with all of my students, but it has been especially impactful for a few reluctant readers who previously struggled to stay engaged with traditional literature. Seeing characters and situations that feel authentic and relevant to their lives has sparked a genuine passion for reading in them. Students who used to be quiet during class discussions are now eagerly raising their hands, sharing insights, and recommending the book to their peers. Your generosity has not only provided us with a powerful teaching tool, but it has also helped instill a lifelong love of reading in my students.","fullyFundedDate":1788456158799,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-in-action-the-hate-u-give-clas/10542605/","projectTitle":"Literacy in Action: The Hate U Give Class Set","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Goerl","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10519922"},{"teacherId":10488296,"projectId":10239057,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity! When the books were first placed in the classroom, the students were absolutely giddy with excitement. They picked up the books, scanned the books, and announced their claim to the books.The opportunity to read graphic novels felt new and engaging for many of them, and the artwork has helped spark rich conversations during our reading sessions. It is common for a student to lean over and share the book with their neighbor.\r\n\r\nOne young man, in particular, who has read several of the new books, shared that he related to a main character in Patron Saints; he felt they had similar life experiences, including moving and living in two worlds with his family and friends . His parents have also noticed the change of his reading habits and he now comes to class with new books of his own. Moments like these are priceless, and they are possible only because of your generous gifts. \r\n\r\nAnother reluctant reader in the class has also surprised me. She now quietly reads through the books, and when she picks one up, she holds it as if it were something dangerous and valuable at the same time. The first book she chose, Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, about a young Latina, clearly resonated with her. At one point, she did not want to return the book because she wanted to keep rereading certain passages. This a moment, we rarely see and now it is one of my favorite school memories.\r\n\r\nWe are fortunate to have a school library and a small classroom library, but the donation of these new books has created a special spark. The titles you provided have truly clicked with my students, and I believe some of them have discovered a new hobby—and perhaps even a lifelong passion—for reading.\r\nI am truly grateful for your generous donation and will pay it forward.","fullyFundedDate":1761564887386,"projectUrl":"project/inspire-a-reluctant-reader-today/9488667/","projectTitle":"Inspire a Reluctant Reader Today","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gonzales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1889054_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1780701051127","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1889054"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32684","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1877,"numTeachers":85,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":74,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":32684,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Arlington High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Arlington High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/riverside-unified-school-district/arlington-high-school/32684"}
