The first thing I put to use were all the items used for cleaning to make sure that the classrom was clean and fresh for the students, the desk were nice and clean and the students noticed this as soon as they entered. I also made sure to put up the posters that I was able to obtain through your support. These posters are very visible in the classroom and what I like best is that they remind students that as long as you try your best it is okay if you don't get everything just right the first time, because you are still learning. This is especially important in my engineering classes, as this can be a difficult subject for our students.\r\n\r\nI want to say a big thank you for the gift card I was able to get to Teachers Pay Teachers. I have put it to good use so far and was able to find fun activities for my students for our first days of school. My students truly enjoyed creating an agamograph design, which was one the activities I obtained from TPT. Also, instead of doing the usual introductory presentation that students fear, because they are put on the spot, I was able to get a one pager activity from TPT that allowed my students to introduce themselves to their classmates and peers in a safe way. I work in a low socio-economic area where my students are constaly exposed to fractured home lives and instability in housing. My students are high school students who should not be exposed to these difficulties so early in their lives (or ever) but they are. Unfortunately, this affects their mental health as their brains are still developing and so being exposed to trauma tends to affect them mentally. As the former SST (Student Success Team) coordinator at my school, I was able to see first hand how these mental challenges affect our students and end up resulting in negative behaviors and poor perforamance in the classroom. Unfortunately, many have a hard time understanding that the traumas endured by our students may result in challenging behavior and lack of motivation to complete work in the classroom, but I know that our students deserve so much more and so we need to educate ourselves to learn how to help all of our students including those affected by childhoold traumas. \r\n\r\nThe books I was able to obtain through Donors Choose is helping me be better educated in the subject. One of the books has helped me understand that sometimes our students just need to have a voice in the classroom. Therefore, I am trying to find activities that will provide this to them, especially in cretive ways that also lets them express their true personalities, which are sometimes masked by the traumas they have endured. The items I requested went towards the middle school girls. Our first game was last Thursday, September 18th. The girls were nervous about cheering in front of a crowd, but they did great. From saying the cheers louder than they had at practice to even having their hair in the high ponytail I wanted. \r\n\r\nThe bows look nice and the kinetic bands will get used soon, but the duffle bags is the biggest change that I see. Last year girls would carry pom poms in plastic bags or stuffed in their backpacks. This duffle back allows them to carry cheer related items in their duffle bag including pom poms.\r\n \r\nThe blow-up mat is what I am most excited about. Some of the middle and high school girls have already tried it out. From backbends to trying a 007 move.
