A lot of them remember Percy Jackson from when they were younger, whether it was reading the books, watching the movies, or seeing the Disney+ show. It's been fun hearing them talk about the characters and how excited they are to revisit a story they grew up with.\r\n\r\nNow that we have the books, I'm starting to put together a unit that will let us have some fun while still working on the reading skills we've been practicing all year. We'll explore Greek mythology, look at how characters change throughout the story, and compare the book to the movies and TV show. I'm really looking forward to showing students that a book they might remember from elementary or middle school can have a lot more to offer now that they're older. Sometimes the best way to get kids interested in reading is to give them something they already know and enjoy!\r\n\r\nI'm planning to use this unit to finish out our school year, and I honestly couldn't think of a better way to wrap things up. By then, my freshmen will have spent the year working hard on their reading and writing, and this will be a chance to use those skills with a story they're actually looking forward to reading. When we explore a theme or topic in class, I can recommend other books that build on those ideas. I especially love that having a variety of genres and reading levels gives students more choices and helps make reading feel less intimidating.\r\n\r\nWhat excites me most is the possibility of reaching students who have never thought of themselves as readers. Sometimes a book cover catches their attention, a first chapter leaves them curious, or a conversation about a story makes them want to know more.
