One of the most meaningful things about this project has been seeing students simply reach for a pencil, notebook, or other supply when they need it and get to work. After everything our community experienced, being able to provide that small sense of normalcy and consistency has meant so much.\r\n\r\nI also want to extend a very special thank you to the families who donated to this project. Having headphones with microphones make is easier than talking to the computer and provided less distractions in class with everyone talking or listening to computers. The most popular were The Handmaid's Tale, Station 11, and Brave New World, though each title was selected for the assignment. Students had to look at 4 different titles and spend about 5 minutes with each book. In those 5 minutes, they previewed the title, cover, back cover, inside cover and read the first few pages. Then they completed a short assessment with their first impressions of the book. Once they completed 4 rounds of this, they selected the title they wanted to read for their reading unit on aspirational capital.\r\n\r\nStudents were given about 3 weeks to complete their books with time provided in class. Then they completed an argumentation essay about how characters in the novel maintained and nurtured aspirational capital throughout the story. Particular focus was given to analyzing how characters stayed hopeful through action and available resources. \r\n\r\nIt was such a cool unit and the students had nothing but positive feedback. Without these book titles, this unit wouldn't have been possible. They are learning how to unpack complex themes like love, fate, courage, and perseverance. They are building vocabulary and strengthening comprehension by comparing modern dialogue in the graphic novels with the original language of Shakespeare and Homer. Most importantly, they are learning that difficult texts can be understood when they are given the right tools.\r\n\r\nOne student explained it best: \"It's been very helpful because we are able to understand Shakespearean language more clearly when we have the visuals to support our comprehension.\" That simple statement captures what is happening in our classroom every day.\r\n\r\nReading time now looks completely different. Students sit with both books open, moving back and forth between the original text and the graphic novel. They point to illustrations to make sense of scenes, reread important moments, and talk excitedly about characters and choices. Even students who once avoided reading are participating, discussing, and finishing entire scenes with pride.\r\n\r\nThe students who are benefiting the most are my English language learners, reluctant readers, and those with special learning needs. We paired this graphic novel with our unit on journeys and how they teach us who we truly are. As students followed Bilbo Baggins's adventure, they didn't just read the story — they reflected on courage, personal growth, facing fears, and stepping beyond comfort zones. They made thoughtful connections between Bilbo's journey and their own lives, and many eagerly compared scenes from the book with the movie adaptations, which deepened their understanding and sparked rich discussions.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks active and joyful. Students examine illustrations closely, discuss how images and words work together, annotate important moments, and collaborate in small groups to analyze characters and themes. The graphic novel format has been especially powerful for developing readers, English language learners, and students with special learning needs. The visuals support comprehension while still challenging students to think deeply about the text.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who once felt hesitant about reading are now among the most enthusiastic participants. One reluctant reader told me this was the first time a \"big book\" felt possible. Another student with learning challenges proudly shared insights about character growth during our discussions. After returning to our school since the Eaton fire we have had to struggle with an influx of students from other schools due to their schools not being open and a lot of our students didn't have simple supplies let alone school materials. Your contributions have made it possible for my students to be more organized in class, perform confidently in our new uniforms, and allowed us to be amplified in outdoor spaces. \r\n\r\nSince receiving the folders from all of the donors it has been so much easier for all of our kiddos to keep track of their music and for us to learn all of our songs with more efficiency. Previously, The students had their music in their own folders and often times they would forget their folders or leave them in other classes. Now, we keep their folders in the classroom in our new organizer shelves, when the students are sitting in their seats they use the new chair covers to put their stuff in, and they use digital copies to practice at home. We've literally learned twice the amount of music than we did last years around this time.\r\n\r\nWe have our BSU Assembly coming up next week and our student body won't know what hit them when they see us shining in our metallic fits while singing and doing our movements. The joy on the choir student's faces when they opened those boxes and saw all of the outfits was priceless. I will most definitely be posting our performance online. The great thing about the outfits is that we get to use them for multiple things. We will have some of the pieces being used in our upcoming Spring musical this year as well.\r\n\r\nThe amplifiers have been such an godsend. Our auditorium is a great space, but it isn't the best for our choral students to sing during assemblies because there are always so many moving pieces and groups on and off the stage. So, being able to have packs that amplify the student's voices without being hooked up to our system and adding the three microphones that we always have, really made a difference in our sound and to quote my student \"our fit is T\". The students were so excited when the underglazes got delivered. Earlier in the semester we researched four different masks from cultures around the world. We studied about Nigerian Igbo masks, Japanese Noh masks, Italian Commedia Dell'Arte masks, and Mexican Aztec masks. \r\n\r\nAfter researching and learning about these masks and cultures, every student chose one of the cultural masks they studied and made their own mask out of clay. Through their research the students were able to identify the major characteristics and important features of the type of mask they were making. The final step in our cultural mask project was using the underglazes you allowed us to purchase to paint and decorate their masks. The students were so happy that they could use underglazes to get every color and detail on their masks right and just the way they wanted.\r\n\r\nAfter glazing and firing the masks, we displayed them in the foyer of our school auditorium during our winter concert. The students were so proud and excited to show their masks to the school community.
