Craft sticks were put to work mixing oobleck as we studied states of matter. The plastic bags powered our \"chemistry in a bag\" investigations into endothermic and exothermic reactions, including a class favorite: making ice cream. The glass beakers have already been used in multiple chemistry experiments and will continue to support future labs.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping bring these lessons to life. Thanks to your contribution, our students have had the opportunity to explore exciting scientific concepts in innovative ways, and we are thrilled to share the remarkable progress they've made.\r\n\r\nThrough hands-on experiments, students have discovered the fascinating phenomenon of phosphorescence, where light energy can be stored by a substance and later released. They observed how certain materials absorb and glow for a period of time, gaining an appreciation for the intricate ways in which energy can be harnessed and released in nature. This discovery sparked curiosity, wonder, and fascination as students learned to identify everyday objects that exhibit this intriguing behavior; in our case it was paint and tonic water that went into the Oobleck.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, students delved into the concept of light reflection through the study of muscovite in mica powder, a unique mineral. They explored how muscovite reflects light in unexpected ways, helping them understand the importance of materials in the behavior of light. They also learned that muscovite is not a material that dissolves in liquid, a key property that distinguishes it from other substances, further enhancing their understanding of mineral composition. They loved swishing their test tubes around to see the shimmer (light reflection and diffuse effect) that is created when the mica powder was suspended in the rubbing alcohol.\r\n\r\nOne of the most engaging lessons involved the study of non-newtonian fluids. Students experimented with a mixture of cornstarch and tonic water, discovering how this combination can behave as both a solid and a liquid, depending on the amount of pressure applied. This hands-on activity not only deepened their understanding of physical science but also taught them how pressure can change the state of matter, sparking critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This was our Oobleck and students loved getting messy and watching the concoction solidify in their hand when adding pressure, then running off their hands the the pressure is released. When we turned off the lights and added the black light to this mixture it was so bright the students became more excited and wanted to know what else can glow. We then shined the black light on their clothes to see what would produce a glow and capture energy.\r\n\r\nYour support has made these experiences possible, and we cannot thank you enough for enabling our students to explore and grow in such a meaningful way. These lessons will have a lasting impact on their scientific understanding and curiosity, and we look forward to continuing to inspire them in future explorations.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for your commitment to education and for making these impactful learning experiences possible.","fullyFundedDate":1757973777778,"projectUrl":"project/trick-or-treat/9711632/","projectTitle":"Trick or Treat!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Johns","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9779429_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756012546347","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9779429"},{"teacherId":574796,"projectId":9557950,"letterContent":"I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your generous contributions to our classroom project. They research objects in outer space of their choosing. Due to Earth having an atmosphere, we can grow crops and survive. The students had a blast seeing how the object they chose could sustain life. Due to their object's atmosphere, environment, or objects that can impact their environment, their research helped them understand how our solar system, galaxy, and in turn the universe work. \r\n Students also had a fossil dig where they became geologists and archeologists. They understood the process of carefully working to uncover items. They then had to research the items they found. They were able to identify what type of animal and stone they dug up based on the skull structure and identifying marks. This was the same process for the stone, dinosaur, and shell. The students loved looking at the real skulls, stones, and shells. They were able to expand their understanding that describing traits of an object can greatly impact their results.\r\n I am incredibly grateful that the students learned so much and had a fun time in the process. Students explored the novel through group discussions, journaling, character analysis, and theme tracking. These skills not only strengthen students' comprehension, but also build their confidence as readers and critical thinkers.\r\n\r\nThe book brought our classroom to life—students laughed out loud, gasped at plot twists, and debated character choices. One student who usually struggles to stay engaged with reading was completely captivated by Inigo Montoya's quest for revenge, while another told me it was the first book they've ever finished cover to cover! Several students even went on to watch the film adaptation and eagerly compared it to the novel—an unprompted but joyful extension of their learning.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, students weren't just learning to read—they were learning to love reading.
