Many of my students don't want to work hard at reading because it's hard for them, because they struggle, and because in the past they have been told they are below grade level. These books show them that reading can be fun, that they can be successful at it, and that it doesn't have to be hard. I love the Messi quote and I think it is what I am seeing happening in this class: \"You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it.\" — Lionel Messi\r\n\r\nWorking hard for a dream in sports is much more tangible and real to them than working hard for a dream of becoming a better reader. So many of my students have been defeated and feel bad about their skills, almost to the point of giving up. These kinds of books have helped to make many of my students enjoy reading and look forward to my silent reading routine each day. Along with the graphic novels and information motivational life stories, the addition of the 4 colored soccer balls has been a welcome addition into my class. Students come in every day to check out a ball and I know they are having fun, knowing they can use them every day. It is such a please to be able to tell them they are welcome to read or use a ball every day! Thank you so much.","fullyFundedDate":1755328955254,"projectUrl":"project/we-love-soccer-books-and-balls/9531496/","projectTitle":"We Love Soccer: Books and Balls","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hobbs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3226224_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x510,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704571226147","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/room5hobbs"},{"teacherId":3226224,"projectId":9417976,"letterContent":"Describing the impact of these books is easy. I see my students almost every day, teaching their class, and the beginning routine is always the same. I greet them standing at the door with a smile, they find their book basket which includes their groups' books and journals, and they have a seat. They have the first 10-15 minutes of each class to read silently. We then talk a bit about our books, I'll ask for someone to give a \"book talk\" and then we begin our lesson. Often I'll ask them to look into their books to find something that we are learning about. They have many opportunities to talk about their books and they enjoy that.\r\nWith these new books, my most reluctant boys are finding something they care about and they are absorbed into the stories. For many of the boys, the Sports Illustrated graphic novels are the first complete books they have ever read cover to cover. For others, the Minecraft 3 books are almost never available because students like to hold on and read them again and again. Still others can't get enough of the Real Friends series and they ask to go to the library to continue the series. So, this project has brought joy and humor along with some non fiction and horror fun into my classroom. Thanks so much for all your support.","fullyFundedDate":1754263704854,"projectUrl":"project/i-only-read-graphic-novels/9417976/","projectTitle":"I Only Read Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hobbs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3226224_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x510,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704571226147","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/room5hobbs"},{"teacherId":3226224,"projectId":9150464,"letterContent":"This project has been my most popular book project ever. You would not believe how almost all of these books have been picked up, rather grabbed, and saved in so many boys' book baskets to read during our daily silent reading. Every day we start each class with silent reading and I can't keep track of the popular Five Nights at Freddy's Graphic Novel Trilogy Box Set or the 2 Artemis Fowl books. The Dogman books and I Survived are always popular and I just wanted to tell you how important this project is. \r\n\r\nHaving books these reluctant readers are excited about is only the beginning. They know they can always come back next year and find them here. They know they can request their favorites and either the librarian or I will get them. They are learning that their input is valued and important and their voice is heard. Their excitement is real, their concentration and stamina is improving, they are finding that a book does interest them and hopefully they are believing in the joy that is possible when opening a book.\r\n\r\nCreating a reading habit has been my goal this year and I am pleased to see how successful this year has been. I have been doing book talks every single day, as a way to show off each title and generate interest, but I have to tell you, these books have magic. We are ever so grateful and appreciative of your gift.","fullyFundedDate":1744245389119,"projectUrl":"project/boys-will-be-boys/9150464/","projectTitle":"Boys Will Be Boys","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hobbs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3226224_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x510,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704571226147","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/room5hobbs"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78269","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":443,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":88,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":23,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":76.5,"schoolId":78269,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about C.K.
