When the students first saw the new books, their excitement was contagious—they eagerly flipped through the pages, recognizing some figures they had heard about and discovering new role models they couldn't wait to learn more about.\r\n\r\nWe recently launched our biography research project, and the new books have become the centerpiece of our learning. Each student selected a historical figure that sparked their curiosity, from scientists like Mae Jemison to athletes like Roberto Clemente. They've been using the books to gather facts, write reports, and create timelines and posters to share their learning. It's been amazing to watch them connect personally with these stories and see themselves in the achievements of others.","fullyFundedDate":1739368348448,"projectUrl":"project/inspirational-biographies/8972428/","projectTitle":"Inspirational Biographies!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thweatt","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6584771_orig.jpg?crop=2145,2145,x0,y178&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1675744816209","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6584771"},{"teacherId":9782962,"projectId":8836957,"letterContent":"What a wonderful and thoughtful program this is! Teachers always try to find ways to reach our students. In addition to educating them we like to enhance their social reactions to life. The first part of my project that I used was the book \"It's Okay to Not Be Okay\". I had the entire class sit quietly and think about how they feel when they come to school. I talked about how feelings change not only daily but sometimes the way we feel can change several times throughout one day and it is okay to get angry or sad, we just have to know that it is important to know how to make ourselves feel better. I let some students share how they felt coming to school on that day and they had a variety of feelings to share. After that they sat and listened to me read the book to them and then we talked briefly about things that can make us happy when we are sad or angry. This was a great exercise to help them understand that acknowledging our feelings, good or bad, can be the first step to validating our own value in every state of emotion. The book was the perfect focal point to expand the lesson around. \r\n\r\nThat was an introduction a week before my favorite social emotional lesson with all of the gifts so far. On Valentine's Day instead of having a party I decided to use this opportunity to focus on happiness in their lives. I share my fourth grade class with another teacher and the students often have a lot of energy after they switch classes, so I decided to use all of the donations to have them get to a calm and happy place before they switched on this day. I read \"I Feel Something\" and afterward, just as I did the first time, we talked about what makes us happy when we are sad or angry. This is how we began the second portion of my lesson which was to draw what makes you happy and write a brief sentence explaining your \"happy place\". They loved this activity. They used the colored pencils and were so excited. This lead to the play dough activity. Instead of eating snacks, I let them listen to soft music and choose one of the scented play doughs to play with and then they got to take it home as their gift. I am so appreciative that I had enough to let them take one home and I still have enough for them to have one at school too. They loved having something that they could play with again and again. \r\n\r\nI use the play dough as a relaxing activity whenever I feel like they need to remove themselves from the regular school routine for a bit. It is such a great way for them to get to a calm and content emotional place. This project was a reward for all of us. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart and from my entire class.","fullyFundedDate":1732647070725,"projectUrl":"project/emotions-knowing-better-means-doing-bet/8836957/","projectTitle":"Emotions: Knowing Better Means Doing Better For Students and Teachers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Tristan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9782962_orig.jpg?crop=1401,1401,x1249,y806&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740941617009","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9782962"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25629","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":733,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":90,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"25.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":79.2,"schoolId":25629,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Central Language Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Central Language Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/ontario-montclair-school-district/central-language-academy/25629"}
