The students in our Latino Leadership Club now have the tools they need to turn their ideas into meaningful experiences for our entire school community. The wireless color printer, display boards, art supplies, face paint, toner, and other materials have given students the ability to design, create, and prepare professional looking displays and decorations for our club activities and cultural celebrations. Students are especially excited to have a color printer available because they can now create their own signs, informational materials, photographs, and decorations rather than being limited by the resources available elsewhere on campus.\r\n\r\nMore importantly, these supplies have given our students greater ownership of the events they plan. As they prepare for our Día de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo celebrations, students are making decisions, collaborating with one another, designing displays, organizing materials, and sharing Latino culture and traditions with their peers and teachers. The materials are not simply being used for art projects, they are helping students develop leadership, communication, creativity, teamwork, and event planning skills while seeing their ideas come to life on their campus.\r\n\r\nMany of our Latino Leadership students are first-generation college bound students who are working hard to create opportunities for themselves and make their families proud. Through this club, they are learning that leadership means using their talents to contribute to something larger than themselves. Your support has helped give our students the resources to celebrate their culture, build confidence as leaders, and make a positive and lasting impact on our school community. The materials you helped secure allowed my students to step into the role of the mathematicians they will be throughout the rest of their high school careers.\r\n\r\nIn these photos, you can see these young learners collaborating and making sense of mathematics together. They are trying out ideas, teaching each other, taking risks, and discussing math at a much deeper level than is possible in a traditional, teacher-centered classroom.
