When the new materials arrived—beads, wire, and bracelet-making supplies—students were excited to begin experimenting. Many of them had never worked with jewelry-making tools before, so simply opening the bins of colorful materials sparked curiosity and conversation. Students eagerly began designing Kandi bracelets and friendship bracelets, sharing ideas with one another and proudly showing their progress.\r\n\r\nThroughout the unit, students are creating multiple pieces of adornment, including Kandi and Kumihimo bracelets, beaded wire charms or earrings, and paper bead jewelry. As they work, they are also reflecting on how these objects can represent aspects of their identity, community, and culture. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing students thoughtfully choose colors, symbols, and materials that reflected something meaningful about themselves—whether that was cultural heritage, favorite activities, or personal style. The hands-on nature of the materials encouraged collaboration, problem-solving, and creative risk-taking.\r\n\r\nNext, students will photograph the jewelry pieces they've created and assemble a final adornment collage that documents their work and highlights how their designs communicate personal meaning. They will also complete a reflection connecting their artwork to the broader idea of how people across cultures use adornment to express who they are. Your support made it possible for students to explore art in a tactile, meaningful way, and it has helped them see that even small, wearable objects can carry powerful stories about identity and community. When the boxes of felt, embroidery floss, plastic eyes, paints, and drawing supplies arrived, students immediately gathered around, wide-eyed and full of ideas. They began sketching character concepts right away, eager to transform their drawings into personalized felt stuffies. As they stitched, adjusted patterns, and carefully attached details, I watched them practice patience and problem-solving in real time—helping one another thread needles, troubleshoot, and celebrate small successes. The excitement was contagious.\r\n\r\nWe are also using the acrylic paints and new drawing tools to strengthen foundational skills while encouraging expressive risk-taking. Students have been experimenting with color mixing and bold compositions in painting, while the erasers, blending tools, and ink have elevated their confidence in shading and line work. One powerful moment was seeing a student who typically hesitates to share their work proudly hold up their finished piece, explaining their creative choices with newfound confidence. These materials are not just supplies—they are tools for growth, craftsmanship, and self-expression.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly expanded what is possible in our classroom, and because of you, students are discovering their artistic voices in both traditional and nontraditional art forms.
