My students loved being able to physically see and touch the items we had been learning about, like raincoats, rain boots, umbrellas, rainstorms, handheld radios with flashlights, and rain gauges. \r\n\r\nI have to tell you that their favorite items were the handheld radios with flashlights and the rain gauges. For the rain gauges they arrived in perfect timing for a rainstorm that passed through our town. We had discussed what a rain gauge does and how it was important for them to leave it alone out on our playground. Overnight they collected an inch of rain and were so excited to see it, though very surprised that it was only an inch considering how much it had rained. \r\n\r\nFor the handheld radios with flashlights so many of them had never heard or experienced radios before so they were loving turning the dials to try and find music. They also loved the flashlight part, too! The part that also intrigued them was that the power to the device required them to crank a handle. They are used to plugging in for power or using batteries so this lent itself well to cause and effect when their radio or flashlight would turn off and they'd have to crank the handle to make it come back on.\r\n\r\nMy students have loved all of the items we recieved, and each box that arrived brought smiles to their faces and curiosity about what it could be. With your help I was able to make our learning more real for them and I thank you immensely for that. We also use your reading incentive program at our school, so to share with families, students, and staff that Panda Cares has helped my students in another way is wonderful. Our families and myself are so grateful for your contribution to our students and we love how involved you are. My kinders are loving the new STEM option of kinetic sand. You should have seen their eyes light up when I put it out that first day. They could hardly wait to finish their work to get to the sand. Once they got it out they started exploring the texture with their hands, which went perfect with our decsriptive lessons we have done. We were able to have discussions about their senses and what they could see, feel, smell, and hear. No tasting for this one, lol!\r\n\r\nMy next step for my classroom is another STEM project now that I'm learning more about my kinders and their likes. I've also included some activities to encourage their team building and working with others, by using floor puzzles. My students are loving having more choices to rotate through. They get excited every time I bring out new items that they haven't used before.\r\n\r\nWhen students complete a class activity they get the option to choose a STEM bin to work with, read from our library or, working on their chromebooks. Nine out of 10 times they choose the STEM bins. I love the conversations they have with one another while they are building, the social skills they are practicing as they share the items, and the mental creativity they get to expend as they build things everytime they choose STEM.
