I explained that someone chose to help our class—that they believed in them and wanted to support their learning. One student softly said, \"Wow... she is so kind.\" Another looked up at me, wide-eyed, and asked, \"Woah... she wants to help ME learn?\" In that moment, I saw my students begin to understand what community really means.\r\nMy students worked carefully and proudly on their thank-you notes, asking how to spell words like kind, help, and love. They wanted their notes to be perfect because they felt genuinely grateful. Seeing their thoughtfulness reminded me of why this work matters so much.\r\nWe are now using these resources every single day. Our new rug has become the heart of our classroom, a place where we sit together, share stories, listen to one another, and build trust. The front-facing book display has transformed how students interact with books. Children now choose stories independently, recommend books to friends, and say things like, \"This one is my favorite,\" or \"This book is about me.\"\r\nHands-on materials like the whiteboards, CVC word dice, linking cubes, and pattern blocks have made literacy and math joyful and collaborative. During a recent phonics activity, students rolled the dice, built words together, and wrote them on their boards—smiling, helping each other, and celebrating small successes. Learning feels playful, meaningful, and shared.\r\nThe sensory tools and flexible seating have also made a powerful difference. Some students need movement, some need something to hold, and some just need a calmer way to sit. These tools help students regulate their bodies so they can participate fully in learning. I've heard students say, \"This helps me feel calm,\" and I see how much more confident they feel when their needs are met. These moments mean the world to me, and they are also something that my students can carry with them.\r\nCreating this kind of classroom community is deeply personal to me. My mom, Kirsten, instilled in me the importance of kindness, care, and showing up for others. She taught me that people thrive when they feel supported and connected, and it means so much to me to now be instilling that same sense of community in my students. This project has helped make that possible.\r\nNext, my students will continue building on this work through hands-on reading and writing activities, collaborative math exploration, and creative projects using our new materials. These resources will support not only academic growth, but also the SEL that helps children learn how to belong, care for one another, and believe in themselves.\r\nThank you for being part of our classroom community. You didn't just donate supplies! You helped create a space where children feel loved, supported, and excited to learn. Your generosity is felt every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1754017341135,"projectUrl":"project/a-magical-start-to-kindergarten/9508531/","projectTitle":"A Magical Start to Kindergarten","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Press","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10097651"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7391","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":309,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":45,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":66,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"18.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":94.9,"schoolId":7391,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Hollywood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Hollywood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/west-hollywood-elementary-school/7391"}
