The sensory vests became an important source of comfort and regulation for several students in last year's group of second graders, especially one particular group of boys whose big personalities and strong reactions often brought them into conflict with one another, both in the classroom and out on the yard. It was genuinely touching to watch these energetic, reactive students begin to take pride in wearing the vests. They wore them almost as proudly as they might wear a favorite soccer team jersey! Once other students noticed the calming effect, they began asking, \"Can I wear one too?\" What began as a support for a handful of students quickly became something that students viewed positively rather than as a sign that they were different.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who experienced significant sensory sensitivities, responded beautifully to the vest. He began wearing it consistently and proudly each day. He even went home and asked his mom to purchase him a vest and weighted blanket for home! Previously, he was frequently out of his seat and had difficulty settling into quieter classroom routines. With the gentle pressure and sense of grounding provided by the vest, he was able to settle more smoothly and participate more comfortably in those moments. It was incredibly meaningful to see a simple tool give him a greater sense of calm and control. The vest did not change who he was. While his wonderful personality remained fully intact, the vest helped give him a bridge into the kind of focus and regulation he needed to access learning. Watching that transformation was a powerful reminder that sometimes a small, thoughtfully chosen support can make a very big difference in a child's school day.\r\n\r\nAs promised, I have distributed the sensory vests evenly across our grade level so that students in K–2 can benefit from them as needs arise. The generosity of our two donors has therefore extended beyond one classroom and one group of children, creating an ongoing resource for our broader school community. I am especially excited to introduce the vests to this year's group of second graders and to see how they may support new students in finding their own sense of calm, confidence, and belonging. Thank you for giving our students a tool that has helped them feel more settled, capable, and proud of the ways they learn and regulate. Last year's second graders had an absolute blast using the microscopes to examine their own hair follicles and prepared slides of butterfly wings. For many students, seeing these tiny structures up close transformed something abstract into something real and fascinating. Our weekly garden visits continue to spark thoughtful questions about what happens underneath the soil, inside plants, and even inside their own bodies. The microscopes have helped nurture that curiosity and have made science a hands-on experience that students look forward to. I look forward to this year's group's scientific Ahas! The air-dry clay has been equally well loved, with creative hands eagerly gobbling it up during Free Choice each week. Fridays have become a booming time for creativity, exploration, building, and joyful problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThis project has also made an important difference in keeping our classroom clean and healthy. We make time every Friday afternoon to wipe down desktops and remind students that keeping our shared spaces clean is one way we can help keep germs away. We also use our vacuum cleaner regularly to keep our classroom floors clean and inviting. Having these supplies readily available means we can take responsibility for our classroom environment instead of constantly borrowing equipment or purchasing cleaning supplies ourselves. The tissues, sanitizing wipes, vacuum cleaner, ink, and paper have provided practical support that we rely on throughout the school year, helping us maintain a classroom where students can learn, create, and explore comfortably.\r\n\r\nPerhaps one of the most transformative parts of this project has been the soccer vests. They have revolutionized the way we play soccer during recess and lunch by making teams immediately clear and reducing confusion and disagreements on the yard. Because the vests have been made available to the entire K–2 grade levels, their impact has extended far beyond Room 11. They have played a major role in helping us address ongoing yard conflicts, reducing the stress surrounding soccer games and minimizing the classroom disruptions that can follow playground disagreements. Our students love to play, and these simple vests have helped turn that passion into a more organized, inclusive, and joyful experience. Together, all of these materials have strengthened our classroom community while giving our second graders more opportunities to investigate, create, move, collaborate, and simply have fun learning.
