With the Botley robots, my first graders are learning how to sequence steps, solve problems, and think logically as they program the robot to move along different paths. The technology helps make abstract concepts in math and language, such as direction, counting, and planning, feel concrete and understandable. Students are learning to test their ideas, notice mistakes, and revise their plans, which builds both academic skills and confidence.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about Botley is seeing their commands come to life. They love pressing the buttons, predicting what will happen, and then watching the robot move across the floor. The moment when Botley successfully reaches its target always brings cheers, and even when it doesn't, students are eager to figure out what to fix and try again.\r\n\r\nSeveral students in particular have really connected with this technology, especially those who sometimes feel unsure during traditional paper-and-pencil tasks. I have seen quieter students take leadership roles in their groups by suggesting coding steps or helping classmates troubleshoot. The robots give these students a chance to shine, collaborate, and experience success in a new way.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping bring this engaging and meaningful technology into our classroom. It has opened the door for my students to learn through exploration, teamwork, and joyful discovery.","fullyFundedDate":1715352897204,"projectUrl":"project/friendly-botleys-teach-first-grade-engin/8166270/","projectTitle":"Friendly Botleys Teach First Grade Engineers!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7639126_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1638722776083","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsrodriguez2020"},{"teacherId":7639126,"projectId":7816025,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my first grade students have been using our new Botley robots to explore early coding, problem solving, and teamwork skills in a fun and hands-on way. From the very first day, students worked in small groups to program Botley to move along paths, reach targets, and travel through obstacle courses we created together on the classroom floor. One of my favorite moments was watching a group celebrate when their robot finally followed all the steps correctly after several tries. Right away, they turned to help another group fix their sequence, showing persistence and kindness toward their classmates.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement was unforgettable. Students were wide-eyed, full of questions, and eager to see how the robots worked. As soon as I showed them how to code Botley with the remote, they could not wait to try. Even students who are sometimes unsure about new learning activities felt confident jumping in and experimenting.\r\n\r\nNext, we are connecting our Botley activities to math and literacy lessons. Students will design their own coding paths using directional words, story maps, and measurement vocabulary. They will also begin creating simple challenge courses for their classmates, which encourages them to plan, test, make changes, and explain their thinking.\r\n\r\nYour support has brought meaningful STEM experiences into our classroom and has helped my students grow as problem solvers and collaborators.
