While it's mainly a tool that only the teacher gets to use, my kids have seen it in use and marvel at how photos are printed by layering colors on top of each other to create the full colored image. It was actually a great \"science\" lesson seeing the photo printer in action. \r\n\r\nThe photo printer has been such a delight in the classroom. In kindergarten, we create a scrapbook for each student. Each page of the scrapbook contains an art piece the students made and a themed photo. So far I have used it to print the student photos for the month of August and September and they have come out SO nice! Colors are bright and it was so easy to print from my phone. \r\n\r\nI also plan to use it to print photos of the students to post throughout the classroom at various times in the school year. For example, a photo is displayed for each student next to their work. When they first saw the large box delivered to our room they were excited to see its contents. Once the contents were revealed and assembled their excitement grew tenfold. Not only has the Connect Four been a great addition to for TK students, students in different grade levels also get an opportunity to play before school and at dismissal while awaiting to be picked up with their TK siblings. The purchase of the cart makes it easy to safely put away materials and place them out the next day. We are using the window planters to grow plants right in our classroom, allowing students to observe the plants each day and see how they change and grow. The self watering globes have also helped students understand that plants need water and care to stay healthy.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were so excited to see the planters and immediately wanted to explore them. They were curious about what we would plant and eager to help care for our classroom garden. Watching their excitement as they discovered that they could grow plants in our own classroom has been such a special moment.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our garden project, students will be observing the plants, talking about what they notice, and learning about the different parts of a plant and what plants need to grow. Instead of seeing nonfiction as simply another assignment, students are eager to open a new issue, explore the photographs and diagraphs, learn new vocabulary, and share surprising facts with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThese magazines have also helped me teach important reading skills in an authentic way. We use the Articles to practice identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences, determining the meaning of unfamiliar academic vocabulary, analyzing text features, summarizing information, and citing evidence from the text. Because the articles focus on science and real world topics, students are also learning how to read to gain knowledge, not just to answer questions. \r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading might look like students annotating an article turning and talking with a partner discussing evidence, completing a graphic organizer or connecting something they read to science investigation. The short high interest format makes it especially helpful for students who may not yet see themselves as confident readers because they can experience success while learning something fascinating. I have students who hesitate when giving traditional textbooks but immediately become engaged when they see an article about animal space, human body technology and unusual scientific discovery.
