After experiencing so much loss and change, having access to hands-on STEAM resources gives students an opportunity to rebuild not only their learning environment, but also their confidence in their own abilities. Watching them engage with new tools and materials reminds me that curiosity and creativity can be powerful sources of hope.\r\n\r\nOne exciting way we have already used our new resources is through our Hojalata art project celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Using the Chompsaw to cut and shape cardboard, students explored the art of working with materials, developed their construction skills, and brought their creative visions to life. Inspired by the traditional Mexican art of hojalata, or decorative tin art, students created their own designs while connecting artistic expression with cultural heritage. This project beautifully combined art, engineering, and cultural learning, allowing students to experiment, problem-solve, and take pride in their creations. It was wonderful to see them transform simple materials into meaningful works of art while building confidence and discovering new possibilities.\r\n\r\nOur Innovation Lab will continue to provide opportunities for students to explore what it means to be designers, engineers, and problem-solvers. Through cardboard engineering, digital design, coding, and collaborative STEAM challenges, students will learn that mistakes are opportunities to experiment, revise, and try again. As we move forward, students will take on projects that encourage them to imagine solutions to real-world problems, communicate their ideas, and create models that represent rebuilding and hope. I have also been using the TPT gift cards to purchase supplemental materials that provide engaging, curriculum-aligned activities, allowing students to practice their skills in fun and meaningful ways. The fidget toys have also been a wonderful resource, helping students stay focused on the task at hand and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nMy students were overjoyed when they saw all of the new materials! They especially loved exploring the various new book series. One of my favorite memories this year so far was introducing our classroom library and watching my students explore all of the book choices. This is a time in the classroom where students can build and create independently. \r\n\r\nI also received sets of of a variety of musical instruments. We have used these in the afternoons to explore different musical sounds and expression through music. The students have loved this time in class.\r\n\r\nAnother great donation was a class set of nice and comfortable headphones. The students use their iPads daily to get in their iReady minutes (a math and reading program).
