Receiving these books gave students the opportunity to choose stories that truly interested and connected with them. Having choice in reading helped students become more engaged, excited, and invested in our classroom discussions. Many of the students shared that they saw themselves reflected in the characters' experiences, emotions, and challenges, which made reading feel more personal and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThroughout the month, we paired our reading with mindfulness activities and mental health discussions. Students practiced self-reflection, journaling, breathing exercises, and conversations about emotional wellness alongside the themes in the novels. The girls especially connected with the strong female protagonists who navigated family expectations, identity, personal struggles, and finding their voices. Reading about characters who demonstrated resilience and courage helped students feel seen, understood, and empowered in their own lives.\r\n\r\nThese books created a safe space for students to open up about their feelings, support one another, and recognize the importance of self-care and self-advocacy. Many students who were previously reluctant readers became eager to participate because they felt connected to the stories and characters. This project not only strengthened students' love of reading, but also encouraged confidence, empathy, and emotional growth. Throughout the month, students participated in written reflections, \"Would You Rather\" discussion games, mindfulness activities, and breathing exercises that encouraged them to slow down and check in with themselves emotionally.\r\n\r\nWe paired many of the mindfulness tools with books centered on mental health, resilience, and self-awareness, which helped students make deeper personal connections to the activities. Students also appreciated having opportunities to take these activities outside, where they could relax, reflect, and engage with the materials in a calm environment.\r\n\r\nThe stress balls quickly became a student favorite. Students loved the vibrant colors and enjoyed having a tangible coping strategy they could use during moments of stress or frustration. The mindfulness card decks were also very popular, especially because of the variety of themes and coping strategies included. Students enjoyed exploring different techniques and discovering strategies that worked best for them personally.\r\n\r\nNot every student connected with the same materials, which made the variety especially valuable. Some students gravitated more toward the sketch pads and colored pencils, using art and creative expression as an outlet for stress relief and reflection.\r\n\r\nThese resources helped create a more supportive and calming classroom environment where students felt encouraged to prioritize their mental health and emotional well-being.
