These books have already transformed the way my students see themselves as readers, thinkers, and dreamers. Because of your generosity, we've been able to dive into skills and conversations that simply weren't possible before.\r\n\r\nThe Alchemist has opened the door to some of the most meaningful discussions we've had all year. Students are practicing skills like tracing themes of identity, purpose, and resilience across a full-length novel. Students were able to analyze symbolism, from Santiago's sheep to the desert itself and connecting those symbols to their own lives. Making text-to-self connections as they explore the idea of a \"Personal Legend\" and what it means to pursue one's dreams. They were also writing reflectively, using the novel as a springboard for personal narrative work.\r\n\r\nReading has become active and alive. Students annotate, highlight, and jot down questions in the margins. They pause to debate Santiago's choices, share predictions, and connect moments in the book to their own experiences. Small groups gather in corners of the room to discuss a quote that hit them hard. Others sit quietly, fully absorbed, flipping pages faster than I've ever seen them read before. There's a new sense of ownership because the books belong to them, the learning feels like it belongs to them too.\r\n\r\nOne student who rarely speaks in class raised her hand to share how she sees herself in Santiago's uncertainty and courage. Another student who often struggles with reading stamina has been asking if he can read ahead. But one student that really made a change had emotional growth with this book. He was always a student who didn't tend to enjoy much of anything done in class, but when we finished it, he thanked me for picking this book and that he felt like his dreams mattered and weren't impossible. That's the kind of impact your support has made possible.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in our students. Your generosity didn't just provide books, it provided opportunities for reflection, confidence, and connection. My students feel seen, capable, and inspired, and that is a gift they will carry far beyond our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1777926704882,"projectUrl":"project/helping-students-discover-their-personal/10158215/","projectTitle":"Helping Students Discover Their Personal Legends Through the Alchemist","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Varela","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9418849_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x685,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1774327234210","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9418849"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134669","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":66,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":83.3,"schoolId":134669,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Eastside High School & Eastside STEM Magnet on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Eastside High School & Eastside STEM Magnet","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/eastside-high-school-eastside-stem-magnet/134669"}
