This semester, students used the materials to design posters, paint signs, create classroom and hallway displays, and build messages that celebrated the people who make our campus feel safer, kinder, and more connected. Instead of only discussing bias-based bullying in the abstract, students were able to respond creatively by making art that honored women's history, celebrated teachers and staff, and encouraged a more compassionate school culture.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful moments was watching students gather around the art materials and immediately begin planning what they wanted their work to say. They were excited by the poster boards, markers, paint, stickers, and craft materials because the project gave them a real audience beyond the classroom. Students created thank-you posters for teachers, designed visual tributes connected to different subjects and identities, and contributed to campus displays such as our Women's History Month bulletin board. Their work showed that appreciation and anti-bias action can be joyful, creative, and student-led. They were proud to see their art become part of the school environment rather than just an assignment that stayed in a notebook.\r\n\r\nThe next step for our students is to continue using these materials to create messages that make our campus culture more intentional. We are building from this work through reflection, discussion, and additional student-created displays that challenge exclusion and uplift care, courage, and community. Your donation helped students understand that they have power to shape the climate of their school. Thank you for helping them make that power visible through art, voice, and action.","fullyFundedDate":1771040689955,"projectUrl":"project/our-campus-our-culture-student-led-cam/10089086/","projectTitle":"Our Campus, Our Culture: Student-led Campaign Against Bias-Based Bullying","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Valrie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9411151_orig.jpg?crop=256,256,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745530819337","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missvalrie"},{"teacherId":10035517,"projectId":9908509,"letterContent":"This project has made a real difference for my students by giving them a simple but powerful tool to help them feel more comfortable and supported in the classroom. While many donors are familiar with technology as a learning tool, this project highlights something just as important, helping students access learning by supporting their sensory and emotional needs.\r\n\r\nThe Loop earplugs are helping students better manage the sounds and activity of a busy school day so they can stay present, focused, and engaged. Things like loud transitions, assemblies, group work, or unexpected noises can be overwhelming for some students, and having a discreet way to reduce that stress has made a noticeable difference. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or needing to step away, students are now better able to stay grounded and participate in their learning.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting for students is the sense of relief and independence these earplugs provide. They are easy to use, comfortable, and allow students to quietly advocate for what they need without drawing attention to themselves. There is something very empowering for them in having a tool that helps them feel safe while still being fully included in classroom activities.\r\n\r\nSeveral of my students, especially those with sensory processing differences and autism, have responded particularly positively. These are the students who often experience the school environment as overwhelming, and they have been some of the first to use the earplugs consistently. I have seen them appear more at ease, more willing to engage, and more confident navigating situations that previously caused stress.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped create a more compassionate and inclusive classroom environment—one where students feel understood, supported, and better able to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1764600616351,"projectUrl":"project/helping-every-student-thrive-sensory-to/9908509/","projectTitle":"Helping Every Student Thrive: Sensory Tools for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ochoa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10035517_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761238078789","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10035517"},{"teacherId":8606683,"projectId":10006263,"letterContent":"Your contributions to our classroom library have supported our scholars in exploring their individual reading interests and expanding their exposure to different genres, authors, and literary worlds. While we read classroom texts, scholars have expressed having rarely, if ever, read a book solely for pleasure, and as a result, didn't even know what kinds of books they were interested in at all. Your support in building our library has shifted the culture of reading among our 10th graders tremendously. Now, scholars bring in book recommendations, request to check out books in advance, check out multiple books at once, and even express genuine excitement, shock, and love when they get the book they had been hoping to read or get to the end of that page-turner. Our scholars are much more confident in their ability to consume literature and enjoy it. \r\n\r\nThis is not only impacting my 10th graders, but now, scholars and staff from the entire community have begun to request and check out books, or even simply start conversations and dialogue about reading on and off campus. With your generous support, I have been able to provide financial literacy enrichment through the written word. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the curriculum I teach, I have been able to use the books and give them away as incentives to students in my classroom. For example, I have developed a classroom economy in my classroom, where students earn \"money\" for doing tasks, contributing positively to class, and having great behaviors. Each month, I hold a classroom auction where these books go up for bidding! In total, I have had over 30 scholars bid on and win the right to choose a book. I have also started a group chat with the students who won books, and will occasionally message the group to promote and encourage reading.\r\n\r\nI have also been able to donate a handful of the books to our 9th grade English teacher. She has started a small library in her classroom and I decided it needed to be filled with some books about money! After explaining the rules, we began playing for a period of 2 weeks, each day playing against different classmates in a tournament style. Because I taught financial literacy to these seniors, I incorporated budgeting, investing, and overall money management skills and lessons into the game through trivia add-ons and budgeting documents. My scholars loved the experience and looked forward to competing each day. \r\nThis school year, I started a Monopoly Club at my school and after a few weeks, we have over a dozen regular attendees from grades 9th through 12th. Because of your generosity, each of my AP Biology students now has their own copy of The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee—an opportunity that would not have been possible without your support.\r\nThe excitement in our classroom has been incredible. The students were genuinely thrilled to receive their books, and it's been amazing to see them engage with the material not just as part of a curriculum, but as curious young scholars hungry to learn more about the world around them. We are using The Gene as an enrichment resource, and it's already sparking thoughtful conversations, questions, and reflections among students.\r\nI selected this particular book because it's more than just a science book—it's a beautifully written narrative that explores the evolution of our understanding of genetics, from ancient misconceptions to groundbreaking discoveries that continue to shape medicine, ethics, and society today. It blends history, science, and storytelling in a way that makes complex ideas accessible and deeply meaningful.\r\nIn a world where science literacy is more important than ever, I believe it's crucial that students understand not only the what of science, but also the why and how. The Gene gives them that bigger picture: how far we've come in our understanding of ourselves as biological beings, and how deeply that understanding is tied to culture, ethics, and the human experience. The book touches on key social issues—from eugenics to medical equity—and shows students how science is not just something done in a lab, but a transformative force that impacts lives in real, tangible ways.\r\nYour donation didn't just provide books—it provided access to ideas, inspiration, and the tools for my students to think critically about the past, present, and future of science.
