Your support has transformed our classroom, offering a tangible connection to a rich musical history that deeply resonates with our curriculum. The banjo is not just an instrument, it is a vital teaching tool that has allowed us to explore the underrepresented roots of African American music. To MMOSS (Music Makes Our Students Smarter) and all of the supporters of MMOSS as well as the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., thank you for investing in this meaningful educational experience for my students!\r\n\r\nThey were so excited when the bright red banjo was unboxed. It quickly became a highlight of our study, particularly as we prepared to celebrate African American History Month. The true magic happened when they began to experiment, combining those historic string music rhythms with contemporary hip-hop beats they know and love. They all tried it and ultimately voted to select a classmate to play it during our performance. So, this project culminated in a performance piece that demonstrated the influence of African American string music traditions, showing how the past echoes brilliantly in today's sounds.\r\n\r\nWe held a program for our school and community during African American History Month. The moment was truly brought to life by the one student who stepped into the spotlight and played the donated banjo during the performance. Your generosity made this moment of pride, education, and cultural celebration possible, and we are thankful for the impact you've made on our students' learning journey.","fullyFundedDate":1766185393443,"projectUrl":"project/music-from-west-africa-to-los-angeles/9961893/","projectTitle":"Music from West Africa to Los Angeles","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hamilton-Aguilar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1229262_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1513806965237","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/qhamilton-aguilar"},{"teacherId":382287,"projectId":9313589,"letterContent":"I can not begin to tell you how much this project means to us. While many people use technology at home, in our classroom it becomes a powerful tool for reading practice, phonics games, and interactive activities that keep students engaged and motivated.\r\n\r\nStudents are especially excited about being able to record themselves reading and use digital books that match their skill levels. One student who often struggled to focus during traditional lessons now stays engaged and proudly shares his reading recordings with the class. Another student, once hesitant to read aloud, now eagerly uses the highlighting and drawing tools to show what she understands.\r\n\r\nYour support has brought joy, confidence, and new learning opportunities to our classroom. The texts are used as supplemental reading materials, giving students access to stories that are engaging, age-appropriate, and connected to their interests. By choosing books that are fun and relatable, students feel more excited about reading—not just at school, but also at home. This has helped build positive reading habits and increased their confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nThrough these books, students have been learning important reading skills such as identifying plot elements (beginning, middle, and end) and describing character characteristics. We've had thoughtful class discussions about characters' actions, feelings, and motivations, helping students strengthen their comprehension and critical thinking skills. These lessons allow students to go beyond just reading words on a page and truly understand and enjoy the stories.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks more joyful and interactive. Students eagerly choose books, share favorite parts with classmates, and make connections between stories and their own lives. Some students who were previously reluctant readers are especially excited, often asking to take books home or reread them during free time. Your support has truly been relieving and impactful, helping create a classroom environment where reading is fun, meaningful, and something students look forward to every day.","fullyFundedDate":1758768689038,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-love-of-reading-one-book-at/9678457/","projectTitle":"Building a Love of Reading, One Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Acosta","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8515117"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7557","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":381,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":81,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.2,"schoolId":7557,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Birdielee V Bright Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Birdielee V Bright Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/birdilee-v-bright-elementary-school/7557"}
