We read together, we talk about the reading together, and the students write about what they're reading all the time. They walk into my classroom very nervous, wondering if they're going to be judged for their language barrier. When they see a whole bookcase of books in Spanish, they light up. I teach at a 100-year-old campus in Downtown Los Angeles, and almost all of my students come from low-income houses. They're not use to having nice things, and they're always happy when they get these books.\r\n\r\nThe other great thing about these books is that it gets kids off their screens for my class. I'm a firm believe in that paper beats screens every time, and this year, I'm going completely tech-free in my classes, with paperback books, and assignments on paper. My students were skeptical at first, but they're coming around and telling me how much they love reading on paper, so it's definitely working!
