My students come from an economically disadvantage background. Our school is a Title I site, meaning that a minimum of 80% of the students, hence their parents are economically struggling. The majority are the sons/daughters of immigrants, many are immigrants themselves. Some struggle with English, but all are willing learners and hard workers. Additionally, by local standards, the area is considered economically depressed. Social ills such as gang violence and drugs are prevalent in the neighborhood. Despite these barriers, I believe that our students will rise to the level of expectation we (teachers) hold them to.
