I am honored to be developing a new theatre program for my Title I middle school. I have an eager band of young theatre enthusiasts who have already performed two plays and are excited to get started on our spring show. \r\n\r\nOne of the biggest challenges, however, is helping students who don't consider themselves performers discover that there's a place for a variety of talents and interests. To that end, I'm focusing on developing a theatre production curriculum and giving my students a taste of theatre design. After building our knowledge of design concepts and vocabulary related to production, the culmination of our set design unit was creating our own model sets. \r\n\r\nWe had so much fun! The students were thrilled to browse through the fabric and paper varieties, and the hot glue guns were a huge hit. We did a safety lesson before introducing them, and I was so pleased to see the conscientious attitude with which they approached using the supplies. This project transformed my rambunctious 7th and 8th graders into focused artisans. \r\n\r\nTwo moments especially stood out. One group of very quiet boys, who had always hung back and hesitated to participate, called me over to show me their \"invention.\" They had figured out how to cut the cardboard and hang the fabric so that it made a working curtain. They were so proud! In contrast, two boys who often caused discipline issues in class were working together. They chose a script that took place in a bathroom defaced by graffiti—thinking they were being a little cheeky and rebellious. Initially, they said, \"How are we supposed to make a sink? Or a bathroom stall?\" I made a few suggestions about materials they might use, and after a little dragging of feet and rolling of eyes, they started problem-solving and came up with ingenious solutions. One of the boys said, \"This was one of my favorite projects I have ever done.\" \r\n\r\nThis semester, I have a new crop of students who will get to have the same experience, while my year-long group will be diving into costumes and props, so the ironing board will come into play—and the glue guns will continue to get a great workout!","fullyFundedDate":1760977247162,"projectUrl":"project/magic-makers-a-theatre-production-lab/9427435/","projectTitle":"Magic Makers: A Theatre Production Lab","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wyson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10061472"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99450","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":400,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":73,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.4,"schoolId":99450,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Barack Obama Global Preparatory School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Barack Obama Global Preparatory School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/barack-obama-global-preparatory-academy/99450"}
