When I let them know that they could take any shirt for free, they smiled and shook my hand with excitement. As they look through the selection of college shirts, I took the opportunity to speak with them about colleges throughout the United States. \r\n\r\nYou've supported twenty-four of my students but your kindness has also impacted me. One of my favorite moments at work now is walking around campus and seeing a student with their yellow \"UCLA\" shirt or their yellow \"USC\" shirt. As a teen, I discovered the joy of reading. I quickly learned how it transforms and transports; how it raised my quality of life while expanding my vocabulary and writing ability. When I became an English teacher, one of my goals was to introduce reading adverse students to the wonderful world of literature. The hardest part for most students is finding engaging, worthwhile books. Once they find something that suits their fancy, they are hooked! So, such a wonderful and specific donation is used to hook my students on Literature. \r\n I teach a Literacy Intervention class, where students are allowed to to choose their own reading books and are allowed to read for a portion of the class. Most of my students have the idea that they will never be better readers ingrained into their psyche. They assume because they have struggled in the past, or because they have a learning disability, or because they are English learners, they will never improve. Providing graphic novels, books in Spanish and English, and exciting stories proves to themselves that they can read! It just takes a lot of patience, practice, and the desire to continue to read. To hold students accountable, I grade them on a summary of what they read that includes objective summary, identifying themes, and central ideas of the text as well as character analysis. \r\n My Spanish speakers were the most excited when I told my classes about the new books we received. Most books I have are only in English. They ran over and started talking to each other about the books they planned to read and which they would read next, playfully arguing with each other over books they wanted or that were already taken.
