As I have many class periods with students with diverse needs, these books have been a way for students to be able to see themselves in literature. Oftentimes, as a middle school student, students are not aware that literary characters are multicultural. They are so used to not seeing themselves in books that, when they do, they find it difficult to find \"beautiful.\" Having books with main characters of all types of backgrounds allows me to showcase them proudly, while reminding students that heroes come in all shapes and colors. \r\n\r\nAlthough I teach middle school, these books give power to students who are struggling or reluctant readers. They allow them a starting point, which is identifying commonalities between themselves and the character. They also provide visuals for students who need to see the scenarios the characters are in. Additionally, having books of all levels allows students to access content that they feel may be out of reach without any shame. English Learners, reluctant readers, and students who need pictures to assist their reading have been enjoying the books so far! Creating 3D models and printing them is wish-fullfillment at its most satisfying. Students can dream of something then have it in their hands in a matter of a few days. We used this particular project to acquire some fun colors that will make the models even more vibrant and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nNot only is this after school club welcoming to all grades it forges new friendships of like minded students. They laugh and create together and end up just hanging out even if they are not making a new model. Students often invite other friends to join and I always tell them to keep it up as we welcome newcomers all year long.\r\n\r\nThis club is bringing students together and giving them an introduction to skills they may use in the future. Creating, networking, working together, and having fun. They routinely clean them up and they are mindful that these supplies help our entire learning community so they should not waste these valuable resources that donors have kindly provided for us. \r\nTeaching middle school continues to require teaching students how to take care of materials and how to utilize these resources in their learning. Having a kit that provides a variety of supplies allows them to explore their creativity. I can add additional notes on the back but when I'm limited with time I can just pull out my stack and find one that speaks to the moment.
