With books like Ahimsa, The Only Road, and The Star That Always Stays, students are not only practicing essential reading skills such as analyzing character motivation, identifying themes, and making inferences, but they are also engaging in meaningful conversations about culture, resilience, and social justice. Nonfiction titles such as Hidden Figures and Jars of Hope help students strengthen their comprehension of informational text while connecting history to present-day issues. These texts allow us to approach reading with both rigor and empathy, helping students see how stories—whether real or imagined—shape our understanding of the world.\r\nReading in our classroom has become more collaborative and engaging because of these new additions. With 5–6 copies of each book, small groups can read together, pausing to ask questions, make predictions, or discuss powerful moments in the text. One group is especially captivated by Front Desk, eagerly debating how the main character's determination can inspire us in our own lives. Another group has connected deeply with Ahimsa, relating the themes of courage and standing up for what is right to challenges they see in their own communities. Students who were once hesitant readers are leaning into discussions, holding onto their books with pride, and—best of all—asking if they can take them home to keep reading","fullyFundedDate":1748899606181,"projectUrl":"project/diverse-reads-united-minds/9241590/","projectTitle":"Diverse Reads, United Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Riehle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3194419_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1457322940376","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/misswhitmer"},{"teacherId":9824257,"projectId":8916305,"letterContent":"We've been using the new SEL (Social Emotional Learning) materials during whole group lessons and in our calm-down corner. They've made a tremendous impact—students are no longer eloping from the classroom or school, creating a much safer and more focused learning environment.\r\n\r\nOne powerful moment was when a student who typically struggles to express emotions used the feelings chart to communicate how they were feeling and independently requested a break. It was a major step forward in their self-regulation!\r\n\r\nIt's been incredible to see how quickly students have connected with the materials. We're currently working on identifying emotions in ourselves and others through role-play and storytelling. The next step is guiding students to use these tools to resolve peer conflicts and express their needs more independently. We'll also be partnering with families to continue this learning at home and strengthen consistency between school and home environments.","fullyFundedDate":1740691854179,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-and-sel-items-for-tk-1-grade-sdc/8916305/","projectTitle":"Sensory and Sel Items for Tk-1 Grade SDC Class.","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lao","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9824257"},{"teacherId":3194419,"projectId":7585655,"letterContent":"WOW!
