One of our favorite moments was introducing the different Olympics-style stations. Students were able to participate in activities such as potato sack races, relay races with batons, toss-and-catch games, cornhole, tug-of-war, and other cooperative challenges. These activities gave students an exciting way to practice gross motor skills while also learning how to encourage their classmates, wait for a turn, and work together as a team.\r\n\r\nThe students were extremely excited when they first saw the materials. They immediately wanted to explore everything and were especially interested in the medals, race equipment, and larger outdoor games. Their excitement made the experience feel very special, and it was wonderful to see students cheering for one another and feeling proud of themselves as they completed each activity.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using these materials throughout the school year, not just for one special event. We plan to incorporate them into outdoor learning, movement breaks, cooperative games, and small-group activities. As students become more familiar with the materials, we will also introduce new challenges that encourage them to follow directions, solve problems together, build confidence, and strengthen their physical and social-emotional skills. The new art materials have made our art center more inviting and accessible, and students are excited to experiment with paint sticks, sponges, colors, patterns, and textures. As they create, they are also developing hand strength, coordination, confidence, and the ability to make their own choices.\r\n\r\nBecause of these materials, I have been able to give my students more independence during art and center time. The supply caddies and scissors stand allow students to safely access and return materials on their own, while the paint sticks and sponges make it easier for them to explore different art techniques. I have been able to focus more on encouraging creativity and guiding students through the process rather than simply managing and distributing supplies. It has been wonderful to see students take ownership of their work and feel proud of what they create.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the Edison International Foundation for helping make this project possible. Their support has helped me create an organized and welcoming art space where my students can explore, create, and build confidence. One of their favorite experiences has been using the farm sensory bin with the scoops, tweezers, and sensory materials. Students practiced picking up and sorting the animals, scooping and pouring, and creating their own farm scenes. While they played, they were strengthening their fine motor skills, practicing turn-taking, and using language to describe what they were creating. It was wonderful to see how much learning naturally happened through play.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were so excited! They immediately wanted to touch, explore, and ask questions about everything. The kinetic sand, Pluffle, sensory tools, and themed sets especially caught their attention. They were eager to try the scoopers, tweezers, and funnels and were very proud when they were able to use the tools successfully. Their excitement has continued each time we introduce a new sensory activity.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using the sensory materials in more intentional ways to connect play with what we are learning in class. I plan to rotate different sensory bins and incorporate counting, sorting, letter recognition, vocabulary, and following multi-step directions. We will also continue practicing how to use the materials independently, share with classmates, and clean up responsibly. Since receiving the light table materials, my students have been more excited and engaged during hands-on learning. The translucent letters, numbers, counting trays, magnetic chips, pattern blocks, and colorful pebbles have given them new ways to practice important literacy and math skills while learning through play.\r\n\r\nThe light table has quickly become one of their favorite areas in the classroom. Students are practicing letter and number recognition, building words, counting, sorting, creating patterns, and exploring shapes in a way that feels fun and meaningful to them. I have also noticed that these materials encourage students to work together, share ideas, problem-solve, and communicate with one another. They are building academic skills while also strengthening their creativity, confidence, and social-emotional development.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials have helped me create more interactive and sensory-rich learning experiences for my students. Seeing their excitement as they explore, build, and discover reminds me how powerful hands-on learning can be. First, this will change the look of our playground tremendously. Right now, our garden is just a patch of dead grass with an old, beat down raised bed sitting on top of the dirt filled with weeds. Donating these materials will help us to transform this eye sore into something so beautiful. By building 3 raised beds and planting many different types of fruits and vegetables, as well as wildflowers, we will create a full garden filled with so many beautiful colors, while the wildflowers will begin to invite many butterflies and hummingbirds to visit as well. \r\nNot only will this garden change the look of our playground, it will also give our kiddos a valuable outdoor learning environment, where they get hands-on experiences and learn about nature, healthy eating, and how things grow. Through all of this, they will also learn how to work together. \r\nWe have not yet opened all of the material, since we are waiting on the major items needed, however we did talk to the children about what our project will be. We will also be inviting the parents and community to come and help with this project. Our children love to dig, so they were so excited to be able to help out with this special project. Being able to see such big smiles on these children's faces just solidified how great of a project this will be! We can't wait to share more with you as the time goes by!
