These engaging, age-appropriate nonfiction texts have given my students a chance to read about real-world topics that they are genuinely curious about. Instead of reading only from traditional books, students are excited to pick up a new issue and discover something they didn't know before.\r\n\r\nThe Scholastic News articles introduce and reinforce important reading skills such as identifying the main idea and key details, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues, making inferences, summarizing, comparing information across texts, and supporting answers with text evidence. Students are also learning how to navigate nonfiction features such as headings, photographs, captions, charts, maps, and diagrams. These are important skills that help students become stronger, more independent readers across all subjects.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks different throughout the day. Sometimes we read together and stop to discuss what we notice and wonder. Other times, students read independently or with a partner, annotate important information, and then share their thinking with the class. Scholastic News has also created wonderful opportunities for students to have authentic conversations about what they are learning. They love sharing surprising facts with their classmates and connecting articles to things they have experienced or learned about before.\r\n\r\nI have especially noticed how much these texts engage students who may not always choose to read a traditional book independently. Students who are fascinated by animals, science, sports, history, and current events can find topics that immediately grab their attention. For some students, that interest is the spark they need to become more confident and enthusiastic readers.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students are not just practicing reading—they are discovering that reading can help them understand the world around them. The books are not sitting untouched on a shelf. They are being picked up, passed around, recommended to friends, read during quiet moments, and talked about long after reading time is over.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things to see is when a student who normally struggles to find a book suddenly finds one they love. Their entire attitude changes. They become excited to tell me about the characters, ask if there is another book in the series, or encourage a friend to read it next. Those moments may seem small, but as a teacher, I know how important they are. Finding a book that connects with a child can help turn \"I don't like reading\" into \"What should I read next?\"\r\n\r\nThe variety of books you helped provide has also given my students more opportunities to see themselves and their experiences represented in literature, while introducing them to people, places, cultures, and perspectives different from their own. We are using these books not only to practice reading skills, but also to spark conversations, build empathy, expand vocabulary, and encourage curiosity.\r\n\r\nI have watched students become more confident readers because they have choices. I have watched classmates recommend books to one another. I have watched students get genuinely excited when new books become available. The Solobo Toys emotion blocks have been a wonderful addition to our sessions. I use them to help students identify and expand their emotion vocabulary, which has led to more meaningful discussions about feelings and self-regulation. These hands-on tools make abstract emotional concepts more concrete and engaging for my students, supporting their growth in communication and emotional awareness.\r\nThe sensory tent and body sock are now part of our sensory room, a space where classes take daily sensory breaks to support regulation and readiness for learning. Students love having a calm, enclosed space where they can relax, reset, and feel grounded.
